I have an ATI All-in-Wonder Pro (PCI 4 mB) card. I am trying to capture video encoding it to MJPEG directly. I am using PicVideo for the MJPEG codec and VirtualDub to capture. However, VirtualDub will not allow me to capture to MJPEG. It says that it is unsupported. Is this because it is unsupported by the ATI card? I would've thought that since this is a software MJPEG encoding, that it doesn't matter whether the card supports it or not, that it would compress the raw AVI to MJPEG on the fly. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

No, mmc 7.1 is not for you. Your card is only the ATI AIW PRO, not the 128 Pro, or Radeon. Different card different drivers and MMC.

First, which operating system are you using? Sounds like you might be using Win2K ?? Your video card should not be the problem. The only thing that would be of concern would be the size of your processor. It has to do MJPEG encoding on the fly. You should be able to do it .. I have with only an AMD K6-300.

If I remember the PIC video codec (which worked very well for me when I was using it) requires to be set up for both play back AND recording. In other words, I think I remember that you could end up with only the "de-coding" part installed, which would give you MJpeg play back but not record. Sorry, but I haven't used it in a while, so my memory is a bit clouded.

There are issues with Win2K and some editing software. I use Virtual Dub in Win2K and it's not as flexible, and doesn't have as many available options (codecs, frame sizes etc.) as an older VFW system. (ie Win 98)

I have an Athlon 950 MHz w/ 256K RAM and 20 GB HD. I'm running Windows 98SE. I've downloaded the latest ATI drivers and video player (not MMC). PicVideo are only codecs. There is no setup other than installation. I tried reinstalling everything, but now I come up with a different error:

Error 418: Capture driver is not installed properly.

My ATI AIW Pro is capturing o.k. So I'm not sure if this is the capture driver for VirtualDub or what?

Sounds like you have everything that "should" work. The only thing I can think of, is for you to check which capture device is being used. I'm at work and don't have VirtualDub here to check, but somewhere in the VirtualDub options you can select capture devices. If I remember correctly you may find both the ATI Card and possibly some VFW MS sort of thing. Check to see that the ATI card is the one being used. Good luck.

Yes, I had checked to see which capture devices are being used. It does have the ATI ones as well as MS ones and PicVideo MJPEG. I tried several different ones but got the same thing (uncompressed RGB, ATI VCR 2.0, PicVideo MJPEG). When I select the first and the last one, it says there are no restrictions. When the ATI VCR 2.0 is selected, it says there are restrictions. I don't recall exactly what it said though.
