How do you deal with a jealous employee

greenspun.com : LUSENET : What keeps you up at night? : One Thread

Hello. I'm 30 years old and I've been with my company for 5 1/2 years and I was recently promoted into a management position. My problem is this: I work with someone who has been with the company for 15 years and has been in the business for 20 years. This person in fact trained me. Now, I've been promoted into a position that she thought was hers and things have now become very strained between us. I know she is threatened by me and feels that she is being pushed out and that things are going on behind her back. There's nothing going on behind her back but she still thinks there is. I've tried to make her feel important and let her know her opinion matters but it's not working. Please help!!!

Helene, It's sad that she is feeling this way. It sounds like she put those roadblocks in her career and is blaming you for them. Upper management made their decision for a reason to promote you rather than her. Perhaps she should spend some time reviewing her place in the company and look for a new and exciting position that will inspire her to shine in another area.
