Can you make a VCD from a avi file created in DivX MPEG 4?

Absolute YES. Use TMPGenc for this and treat the DivX as a regular AVI file.

But wll it work on a regular DVD player if it is encoded in DIVX?

No, Divx MPEG4 can only be played on computer. DVD player do not support that format.

I guess my explanation is not very clear. You need to use TMPGEnc to convert DivX MPEG-4 to MPEG-1 format then burn that on a CD-R using a VCD authoring software such as Nero. This CD (called VCD) can be played on most DVD players.
If you burn the Divx file on the CD-R, DVD players don''t know how to play that.

I tried that TMPGEnc to convert an MPEG-4 (mpeg) to VCD compatible MPEG-1 and it certainly is capable of it, but for converting an Mpeg- 4 200 meg+ file it is taking well over 300 hours to complete on a 1Ghz processor! Anyone know where I can buy a 20 Ghz processor for my system? :)

Yes. You can get a 20gightz processor from the £1 shop in my home town!Seriously though. Why not take your 1gig machine to siberia and over clock it by 20 times! Might speed up the gobal warming though.
