What to do with the peach tree?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Last year I bought some trees from a nursery. All of them lived except one peach tree. (It will be replaced.) When I wrote to the nursery they said that the root-stock was not very good. Although the tree died, the root-stock has sent up new growth from below the graft. I have thought about moveing the tree to another location and see what it does. Will it product peaches? I have also heard that I could try to graft on to the root stock-since it is growing now. Any ideas? It is dwarf stock but it would be nice to plant a small tree in the yard.

It depends on the root stock used to make the graft. Chances are that if it is a dwarf or semi dwarf tree the root stock will not yield the same plant as you origionaly bought.

I cant tell you what the new tree will do but I can tell you why it set up a new growth. I have grafted a few trees and on most of them they try to bypass the new portion. The best thing to do in the future is keep the root stock clean of any new branches or shoots.
