How does one download a whole forum?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

How do I go about downloading an entire LUSENET forum, like, for example, the original TB2K? It seems like people are able to search these forums in some manner that's not apparent to me.

If these aren't downloadable, how can you search every thread on the server for a pattern in a whole forum?

I'm requiring minimal labor here, of course.

Bemused-

All you have to do is a domain search on a major search engine, such as Google. Let me know if you need some tips on how to do that.

Seems to me the last time that was tried it shut Phil down. Remember? That’s what initiated the ‘Animal Shelter Donation Drive’.

There are search programs that will permit you to search this site. Question: why do you want to do this?

The other Bemused [Bemused since 1997].

Yeah, why do you want to do this?

I have it on CD, you mean you didn't get a copy?

Cherri...I didn't like the tone of your response...

Ummm... First of all, I didn't know there was a Bemused since 1997. I guess you precede me (I was born here, circa 1/2000.) Maybe this is part of the reason I want to get historically active.

You are Bemused:Bemused@comedy.xxx? I can live with that. (Mine's better.)

As for the other bemused (born today, 6/19, 2001,) you can pay my taxes if you want.

I don't have a good reason why I want to archive this, I just do. I also like to search for posters, to see their history. I write programs to summarize stuff like this, and I like the personalities involved in this forum, and in the original forum(s). I think these TB2K-related forums qualify as fascinating communities.

It would be a text download, with messages and handles/names only.

I don't want to cause any throughput/performance problems with Greenspun, though, and it sounds like that might be a possible problem, true?

A program called Web Devil might do the trick. It's name is fiendish sounding but it's really not, I have a couple of my sites on a disc for demo's when a connection is not available.

cpr downloaded Timebomb onto a CD, and did the same with his debunky forum. Prolly has Biffy on CD as well. Ask him nice and maybe he'll share. Or maybe Cherri will make a copy of hers for you.

From what I heard, the only problem with downloading was a bunch of people crashed the forum doing it at the same time. Whether it was accidental or intentional is still up in the air.

This is what caused all the fuss:

Sysops? Please? Can give URL for downloading TB Database?

A bunch of people tried it and crashed the forum.

-- (One@WhoWas.There), June 20, 2001.

...At the moment, due to hackers, and/or archivers.

This temporary back-up Forum, will help regular posters "find a place" to continue communications, until the Sysops can work with Phil Greenspun on "what to do next."

Shift Happens.

*Sigh*

Phils TBY2K Message at the top URL level...

Someone was using a robot to grab every page on this server and it was hammering my poor ancient Solaris box (167 MHz processors). The file system was also full. So I had to shut off the most popular forums to let other users have a chance.

I'm a bit humiliated that my service didn't hold up. On the other hand, it was built to support human beings talking to each other. The average human can't read 10 postings per second! So it isn't surprising that a robot could overwhelm this machine.

If you want the forum turned back on, send me a Quad Pentium from www.penguincomputing.com! Or a 10-year-old's Athlon 700 game machine! It is sad that small children have faster computers than MIT but that's life...

Sorry,
