asparagus growing

I have 4 clumps of asparagus that have been growing in our garden for about 10 years. could i devid it to get a bigger biger patch started or do i have to buy more roots. thank you

Yes you can divide them but you will need a sharp shovel with a good handle

An old guy I know divides and enlarges his asparagus bed by rototilling through it and then around the edges a ways to loosen the dirt so that it will spread quite easily. It seemed to work quite well. He said he did it every 3 to 5 years and the bed was 50 years old and never needed replanting.

I bought 9 cheap crowns this year and 2 have produced a tiny spear each. I was so excited to see them! I had pretty much given up on them. This discussion answered my own questions about what to do when they get big in a few years time. Thanks!
