Pigeons info needed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I recently bought 8 pigeons for farm consumption. However I cannot find out much info on raising them. I have observed them now for about 10 days and have them paired off (4pairs) I have also observed one pair mating. I suppose I can expect eggs in about 10 days. Does anyone want to recommend a good publishcation that instructs how to raise pigeons. These are white frill back and was bought at a small livestock auction for 3.50 ea. There are almost (almost)to pretty to eat.

Don't let the pigeons fly, they will go home for a resale..

Strombergs (800-720-1134) has several books on raising pigeons: The Pigeon, Encyclopedia of Pigeon Breeds, Pigeons for Pleasure and Profit, Making Pigeons Pay and Making Squad Raising Profitable.

You're right about the frill backs being too pretty to eat. They aren't too common and are kept mainly by hobbyists. Most commercially grown squab comes from the giant breds most commonly the Kings. They are almost twice the size of regular pigeons. Haven't seen any in quite a while but am sure they are out there.
