June Mystery Photo

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I've posted a mystery photo on the opening page of this forum. What is it? Where was it taken? What's the history and the details?

For some fun you can take a crack at an answer right here.

Oh, boy did I get some wild guesses! But a couple of very close hits. We'll give a partial score for that.

This is NYC "Suspension Bridge". A 4-4-2 leased to the IC for a few years and used all over the system then sold to the ACL after it came off the lease. During the "off season" months, IC leased it to the "pool" and it was used in tour service.

Here you see this future Coast Line beauty wearing IC colors on a charter trip over the CN in Jasper, Alberta, Canada in the summer of 1962 (according to the photographer).

Please send any and all "mystery photo" entries to me at either b.dean2@home.com or bdean@jngray.com along with a complete explanation, photo credits, history, etc. Hopefully we can churn up some interest.

Well the photo is kinda small and my eyes kinda old-a fifties thing, but-It is a pre war Pullman in IC colors. Most probably a 10-5 based upon the window configuration. You can tell that it is pre-war by the Napoleon hat trucks-triple bolter design unique to 1938-39 Pullman products. Now the IC bought several pre war cars from the New york Central circa 1958-59 and some of these probably ran on the city of Miami. Other cars were in the Pulllman fleet-and some NYC cars were painted in IC colors as were some C&NW and had Pullman on the nameboard above the windows, with small owning road initials next to the vestibule. Where is it-well due to the mountains it is out west- maybe Canada-say Jasper or Banff. A lot of Pullmans were used for special trains and sections of trains for tour groups during the summer. Give me a blow up and I will tell you more-maybe.
