Earthquake Late Tax Notices

Uncle Sam is demanding money from a couple of hundred thousand taxpayers in Washington state. The trouble is they don't owe the federal government any money. Washington state residents were given a two-week extension to file their taxes due to the Seattle earthquake. All they had to do was print "Washington state Earthquake" in red ink at the top of their forms. But a computer glitch at the IRS office in Ogden, Utah, printed notices, demanding interest or late payment from earthquake victims. The IRS is now trying to determine the exact cause of the problem. The agency says taxpayers affected should fax or mail copies of their notices to its office in Seattle. As many as 200-thousand people may have received letters in the mail saying they owed money.
