hogdozers (to remove palmetto plants)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Earlier today, with all my chores caught up and nothing else to do,I started reading the archives, land section. One thread was from a woman in Georgia asking about palmetto removal. An easy chore....for the hogs! Just enclose a circular space with an electrical fence, find one of those good ole boys usually at the autoparts house that has a truck that has front end loader tires on it, they travel in threes, the one in the bib overalls will know who is the local hog catcher. Have him bring you a couple of "piney woods rooters" ( thats hog catcher for wild hogs- the ones with the 6 inch tusks), put those hogs in your round hog pen with the palmettos, throw in handsful of loose corn and then stay out of their way. Enlarge your pen as the hogs do their job being careful to never let the electric fence fail. When your through depalmettoing, put the hogs in the freezer, or lay them off and return them to the wilds. Pile up the dead palmetto roots to burn later and bring on the chickens to level, fertilize, and aireate and deweed. Cheaper that a machine, just takes longer....

Well folks, I did not get any feedback on this one; it is true. Just make sure you give those hogs the same respect that you would give a coiled rattlesnake, or a crouched lion. And yes, wild hogs are found anywhere there is palmettos and civilization hasn't spoiled yet.
