T Series Flash

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

Hello. Are there any other flash units by other makers compatible with the Canon T70 ? The 277T seems to be a bit scarce. I would be grateful for any help in this matter.

Regards

The Canon FD system was quite popular 15 odd years ago before EOS came along so many manufacturers made good flash units for it. Vivitar, Sunpack and Metz come to mind. Since then though EOS has changed to a TTL system which is not compatible with FD cameras (in auto mode anyway) and many manufacturers don't seem to make too much new stuff for the FD system. If you want a new flash try looking at the above manufacturers. You might also try Quantum.

If you're OK with a used one I have both a Vivitar 3700 and 4600 and can vouch for them - they work well. These came with modules to adapt them to various camera systems so if you find one for a good price with the wrong module you might be able to get it at another place or off the 'net. I got my 3500 for C$25 with the module.

Look for a flash that is compatible with an AE-1 or newer. It will have 3 contacts on the shoe in a delta arangement. 3 contacts with two on one side or just one contact is an old flash and doesn't have all the automation that a newer one gives you. EOS has 5 contacts on the shoe.

A T series flash added program mode that AFAIK is not provided by any other flash. This probably drove up the price on the flashes so much.

There was a 299T that was just about New-in-box for C$150 a couple of weeks ago at the pacific center store of Lens and Shutter in Vancouver BC. Try their website: www.lensandshutter.com They often have Canon FD stuff for great prices as they really don't want to be in the used camera business.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Cheers,

Duane
