Which one? there are about 2 million of them out there. I am on one of my own mixture of a couple different types, because my doctor has given me 6 mths. to lower my cholestral (at 280 now) or she is putting me on the pill and I really don't like taking chemicals if I don't have too. So far since beginning of April I have lost 9lbs. but that also includes doing exercises and stuff.

It is a simple formula tolose weight, basicly its calories consumed verses calories used. Take your body weight in pounds, multiply by 15. This is the number of calories you need to maintain your currant weight at your currant level of activity. 3600 calories equals a pound. Example, body weight of 150 pounds times 15 equals 2250 calories; over eat by 300 calories per day and in 12 days you have an extra pound, unless you burn it off with extra activities. Period.

Hi Patty, I have been following a variation of the Macgougall Diet for several years now, he has several books out, your library should have them, I have "12 week diet plan" one, but have read all his books, he is a cardiologist, and since I was trying to get my blood pressure AND cholesterol down to avoid being put on BP pills at the age of 40, I figured a cardiologist's advice would be best!

My BP used to 150/110, and total cholesterol of 210, weight 170 pounds. After a year of his recommended way of changing your diet permanently, I am 138 pounds, total cholesterol of 149, and, most importantly, a BP of 125/78! All without drugs!

I eat all I want, of the recommended foods, of course. I am not one to ever go hungry, or miss a meal. But I only eat 100% whole grain foods, ie., breads, bagels, cereals, pastas etc., no white flour products at all, nothing fried in oil ever. You can saute in a good nonstick skillet just about everything! I do eat some chicken and fish occasionally, like twice a week or so, but, never, ever, red meat of any type.

I also gave up dairy of all types, except some Dannon yogurt, because I just couldn't part with it. And I still indulge in chocolate occasionally, it is my weakness.

This is a total way of life change, however, not just a "diet", this is a change of lifestyle necessary to improve your health and your weight, I did not want to die of heart disease like many of my relatives have. After my OB/GYN told me I should really try to lose weight and get my cholesterol down below 150 beacause I was 5 times more likely to die of heart disease as die from breast cancer, that did it more me!

Give Macdougal's way of eating a try, he really makes a lot of sense, you will become healthier and happier for it!

OK I've been with the kids to long , what I meant to say was the low carb diets .Thanks everyone for your above input

Alzheimer's has struck again, I meant the book, "The MacDougal Program, Twelve DAYS to Dynamic Health", by John A. MacDougall M.D., it helps if I have the book in front of me to do this!!! Sorry!

Patty, the low CARB diets work ONLY for short term weight loss, you would die of heart disease if you stayed on them for ANY length of time, and for a diet to really work permanently, you have to change your diet permanently!!! Please consider reading the above mentioned book, his ideas also eliminate arthritis pain, migraine headaches, chronic digestive trouble, and other chronic dieases we have no "cure" for.

Annie where did you get the book from? I have look everywhere and no such book,(Amazon,half.com,abe books,e-bay,google)

Patty,

Look for the book Protein Power - Michael R. Eades, M.D. and Mary Dan Eades, M.D. This is a wonderful book that explains how it is possible to eat a low carb. diet and be healthy. Actually, the key is to eat your "high" carbs at one meal each day - not spaced out at each meal. I have diabetes and had high blood pressure and this worked. I was finally able to start losing weight, blood pressure came down and the diabetes is under control (with no medication for either). This book explains a lifestyle way of eating - not just a fad type low carb. diet. Our library has a copy but I also found a paperback copy at K- Mart for $6.75.

If it tastes good,

!Don't Eat It!

I tried the low carb diet - I loved it and hardly missed the carbs after about 2 weeks. The only problem was - I did not lose weight or lower my cholesterol. I was faithful to the restrictions, but since people lose or gain weight for a variety of reasons - it did not work for me. My problem is the way my system deals with sugar and stores fat. I try to eat healthy (but of course I don't always succeed). The best thing I have found for lowering cholesterol quickly (not for long term use) is SlimFast and Grapeseed Extract supplements. It got my mine down really quick.

Hi TomK, I got the book, it's paperback, at Walden books at the local (hour and a half away, we live in the boonies!) mall. Also, check your library, it's been out since 1990.
