global warming causing intensified weather extremes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

You're out on a sunny Sunday afternoon having a picnic, fishing, or riding your bike. It's sunny and beautiful, in the mid 70's.

Within one hour, tremendous wind gusts blow in, the temperatures drops by 40 degrees, and it starts snowing before you can even get back to your home. When you finally get home, the power is out.

This is the kind of extreme intensifying weather we are going to be getting more and more frequently because of global warming. It will wipe many species off the face of the planet, including man, if we do not act fast to reverse the trend.

King Dumbshit in the White House is more interested in making his family and friends rich, so he laughs it off. He figures he won't live long enough to see the destruction, but his daughters probably will. He doesn't give a shit about them.

Sudden storm knocks out power to up to 20,000 people

May 20, 2001 Posted: 8:41 PM EDT (0041 GMT)

DENVER (AP) -- Up to 20,000 people lost power Sunday as a fast-moving storm packing high winds, rain and snow blew through Colorado.

Xcel Energy said there were a half-dozen outages and that crews hoped to restore power in a few hours.

Some flights were affected at Denver International Airport because of blowing debris and snow. At least one plane was diverted to Colorado Springs.

In downtown Denver, temperatures plummeted from the mid-70s to 37 degrees in less than an hour. Winds up to 50 mph were reported.

Six people were hospitalized after a crash involving up to a dozen vehicles on Highway 85 when blowing dust cut visibility, KCNC-TV reported. The highway was closed briefly between Fort Lupton and Greeley.

The wind knocked down trees and powerlines and snarled traffic in Denver, police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said. A mall in Littleton was evacuated after part of a roof collapsed.

Ha Ha Ha!!

Mans arogance shows up in this whole global warming we are distroying the earth arguement.

First off, we haven't been monitoring the weather long enough to even tell what the norms are over geologic time periods. We can only guess from a very narrow window of a couple of hundred years at best. We don't even know what the normal limits over 5thousand years would be with no more info than that. As for the extreem weather, try having the temp go from 90+ to below freezing inside of 15 minutes or drive through a sandstorm that takes the paint off all exposed surfaces of your car or rain so hard you can't see the house across the street less than 50 feet away. These are all examples from the 40s when my mom lived out in Arizona, before all this global warming crap started. A lot of weather people are starting to ask the question that if global warming is occuring then why can't they see it in a mesurement of the mean temperature in the first 5k feet of atmosphere? Why does it appear to only be a ground level phenom? Get real! Just because a storm gets reported doesn't mean global warming is going to wipe us out even if it does exist. Maybe thats why whoever you are refuring to as King Dumbshit (the ref was a little vague) doesn't "do something about this problem". Because it doesn't exist and he knows that and you don't.

Just passing-- I can't consider your argu(e)ment seriously, if you can't spell.

Back to The Grand Dubya-- I think he does care about his daughters; I just think he's really dumb and doesn't realize he's being manipulated by Corporate interests behind the scenes. He's a fun character who likes baseball. That's all.

As George Carlin has said, the sooner we all "go down the drain, the better." In two hundred years time, we (collectively) have ruined the planet. We deserve the government we have-- and the consequences.

Who, other than the complete moron who posted the comments with this article, attributes that storm, or any like it, with automotive or power plant emissions??

The costs incurred by the Kyoto treaty would bankrupt anyone making less than a million bucks a year.

BWAAAAAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAA HAHA HAA HAAA HA HA!!!

The truth finally comes out!!

Ra's pissant little "business" doesn't even book $1M a year, and he's worried that cutting down on pollution will bankrupt him!! What are you doing out there Ra, cookin up moonshine? LOL!!!

Rest easy little buddy, you are like a fly feeding on a cow pie, the gubmint probably doesn't even know you exist. But thanks for proving that the stupidity of you conservatives is based on nothing but unfounded fear that someone will take your cow pie away from you! LMAO!!!

Miss Ann Thrope "Just passing-- I can't consider your argu(e)ment seriously, if you can't spell."

And just why not? My arguement should stand on its own dispite my attrochious spelling. Just because I haven't taken the time to correct a minor thing like spelling doesn't mean I haven't thought out my position. Minor details like spelling issues could very easily cause you to miss out on some very good information.

Just Passin'--- "....can't consider your argu(e)ment seriously..." Perhaps I overstated; I have to admit that I, too, have serious trouble with spelling from time to time. But your spelling is especially bad and is distracting to the message. I have to wonder if it's deliberate... some sort of political statement? Or something? That said-- the manner in which a person speaks, writes and spells does influence the way in which his message is received. It's just the way of the world. It would be wise for you to brush up. It does you no good to refrain from learning to spell correctly, then to rationalize your laziness by suggesting that your argument is more important than the distraction of your spelling errors. The logic goes like this: if a person is unable or unwilling to attend to the minimum of details, then how is he then able to formulate larger concepts and principles reliably?

Besides, your argument is weak unto itself. You offered anecdotal evidence of a subjective experience. What you may not realize is that there is a tremendous amount of scientific evidence about global warming, accumulated over decades, that has been found to be acceptable and irrefutable by most scientists in the world. The notion that "global warming is a myth" is confined to the fringes here in the United States, only. This state of mind (of denial) is akin to that of those who continue to claim that tobacco products are not harmful, despite evidence to the contrary.

Granted, there is such a thing as "junk science." Granted, scientific research is influenced by monied interests. Granted, there are aspects to nature and being that are beyond human comprehension. But-- just as damage to health is evident in the case of a smoker; damage to the environment is evident on the planet as a result of carbon based polutants-- among other things. This is the truth-- regardless of the poltical rhetoric that surrounds this issue.

This begs the question: why. Why is it that some, political elements in the US constitute the ONLY faction in the world-- on earth-- on the planet, that still consider the premise that "global warming is a myth?" Could the reason be (A) that people in our country are far better educated and intelligent than any other people on earth? Well, I doubt that. Look around at any shopping mall. Or (B)-- could the reason be that our status as consumer-citizens, brainwashed from childhood to consume, consume, consume-- to the extent that the United States out consumes all other countries on earth and that our collective consumption is an economic influence unto itself-- therefore necessitates our collective compliance with forces that encourage consumption at any cost?

The answer is (B). Good luck with your spelling.

Miss Ann

It is evident to me from reading this and other boards that good spelling and good ideas do not go hand in hand. Just because I am not anal enough to type this up in a wordprocessor and spell check it before cutting and pasting it into the reply window does not mean that I haven't thought out my arguement.

A group of top meterologists in the US have come out recently and stated that they see no evidence of global warming. Their data comes from measurements of temperatures in the first 5000 feet of the atmosphere and the mean temperature has not increased overall. Its higher in some areas and lower in others and it balances out with a net increase of near zero. Here are some articals backing my side.

http://www.ncpa.org/hotlines/global/pd112700c.html

http://www.heartland.org/studies/ieguide.htm

http://www.aynrand.org/medialink/warming.html

http://bachelor.wabash.edu/issues/104/08/News/warming.asp

I won't go on with links to reputable articals by knowledgable people. Sorry they arn't links but we are all used to cut and paste by now. I haven't done one here in a while and don't feel like experamenting to help remember how to do a link.

Just Passin' I have a friend who is convinced that if you don't know how to diagram a sentence, then you can't think- to say nothing of spelling.

Out of curiosity-- how old are you? Are you one of those twenty/thirty somethings whose basic education was lacking at the elementary level? I'm curious-- just to add data to my bank. You see, I have a theory that there are whole generations of Americans- who are otherwise somewhat knowledgeable in their respective fields- who can't spell or manage arithmatic without a calculator in hand. Just curious is all. Don't take offense. If you can manage your affairs without being able to spell, then, by all means, carry on at full speed. [BTW I never use spell check or "cut and paste." I can take full blame for what I post.]

Also, your links ain't gonna' change my mind. But you may console yourself with the notion that now that the information is posted, someone else may change his. You will have done your part to educate and enlighten, however small the audience.

Actually, I hope that global warming is a myth and that the bizarre, peculiar and remarkably dangerous weather of late and predicted for the future is simply a cycle of nature, which will eventually settle itself over time. Or perhaps, there are two alien camps in the world. One on our side and one with its tenacles in the countries of Russia and China; each at war with the other using Tesla and advanced alien technology to modify the weather, as a weapon of destruction. Sorta' like the scenario alluded to in the X-Files movie.

And, gosh, I really hope that we'll wake up in the future as Woody Allen did in his movie, "Sleepers," and discover that yes, we can drink, smoke, eat steak, eggs, bacon and anything we want as much as we want and for as long as we want. In fact, it is healthier to do so, as opposed to the relatively stringent dietary advice promoted now.

I am 39. I tend to spell phonicaly and though I got great marks on standardized tests as a child I was never a scholar. I never agreed with the idea that memorizing everything in site ment you where smart. Spelling is mostly memorization and a little thinking.

We as a human race have been spoiled by good weather for the last few thousand years according to some sources. The tide seems to be shifting back to more dramatic but less people friendly weather that just may be more normal than the stuff we have been accustom to.

Miss Ann Thrope wrote "This begs the question: why. Why is it that some, political elements in the US constitute the ONLY faction in the world-- on earth-- on the planet, that still consider the premise that "global warming is a myth?" ....

But Miss Ann, USA is not the only faction that is sceptical about global warming. Have a look at this european commentary. Then try this site in Tasmania with links to countries all over the world.

Here in New Zealand our government is committed to the Kyoto protocol, but very few physical scientists agree with them. In most parts of the world the concept of global warming is more political than scientific.

Now here is a test for you... try to a get a copy of the IPCC Third Assessment Report (often referred to as TAR). No scientist that I know has been able to get a copy. All that is available is the summary for Policy Makers which is full of dire predictions, but has absolutely no pysical data to assess.
