For a thorough discussion of Poe's poetic ideals, try the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore site at http://www.eapoe.org Look under his essays for "The Philosophy of Composition", "The Rationale of Verse" and "The Poetic Priniciple". Nothing like getting it from the primary source. Good hunting.
