Depends on what your 'budget' is. All the Canon 75-300's as well as the 100-300 USM have esentially the same optical qualities.

I wouldn't spend any extra for the micro-motor USM in the 75-300 since it doesn't offer *ANY* adavntages over the non-USM except slightly reduced noise.

The 100-300 USM uses a real ring type USM and is significantly faster and offers FTM. It's also built better.

The 75-300 USM IS offers image stabilizaton which is very handy in this lens, but AF is dismally slow and it's not very 'budget' friendly.

The recently discontinued 100-300 f/5.6L has much better optics but is a slow, clunky, push-pull zoom design. As soon as the current new stock is depleted, used prices should climb back above the price of a new one right now ($330 at B&H).

You could also consider Sigma, Tamron, etc. I wouldn't... But they focus very close and are optically they are about the same as the Canons.

Sigma
