Sometimes you get to a point where you can no longer live with yourself, as you realize that yourself and your "identity" are not the same thing.

People have been realizing this throughout time, spontaneously. Then they go about trying to explain it to others, which is close to impossible.

As I understand it, Jesus understood this and tried to teach it and was killed for it.

People can get just as attached to their philosophical tracts and their religions, as they can to anything else. In turn this becomes food for their egos and an obstacle to their enlightenement ("salvation"). Funny how the mind works, isn't it?
