Fax-copier may catch fire By SANDY McMURRAY-- Special to Canoe

Canon Canada Inc. is voluntarily recalling and replacing approximately 5,000 Combination fax and copier machines in Canada because they may catch fire.

The units involved, the FAXPHONE B640 combination fax/copier, were manufactured between Sept. 30, 1999 and Jan. 26, 2000. Canon has discovered in the U.S. that a component in the unit may malfunction, potentially resulting in fire.

The company says no incidents have been reported in Canada.

All FAXPHONE B640 combination fax/copier machines sold in Canada with serial numbers between UKN07867 and UKN15733 will be replaced, at no cost to the customer. The serial number is printed on a silver label located on the back of each unit.

FAXPHONE B640 combination fax/copier machines sold in the United States bearing the serial numbers UKK52923 to UKK55442, UKK60513 to UKK99999 and YKK02001 to YKK20000 are also subject to this recall.

Customers are advised to call Canon Canada Inc. toll-free at 888-280-7858 from 9am to 8pm ET, Monday through Friday to request an instant exchange.
