Police to recruit transsexuals

A police force is planning to recruit transsexuals to promote its equal opportunities policy.

Central Scotland Police says it would like to see more applicants from a transgender background as part of its Diversity Strategy.

Chief Constable Andrew Cameron says the initiative will also invite homosexuals and people from ethnic minorities to join the force.

The new policy is aimed at improving relations with under-represented members of society as part of the force's response to the McPherson report.

Currently only two of the force's 1,000 officers are black, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Chief Constable Cameron said: "I would extend an open invitation to all lesbian, gay and transsexual groups to seriously consider the police force as a profession.

"We have an unequivocal openness in Central Scotland towards everyone in our community and I would urge them to come along and see what we are about."

Griffith Vaughn-Williams, of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, said the move would make people from minority groups feel more confident in reporting crime.
