Depth of field scale on EF24mm f2.8

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hello all, I can not quite figure out what I am meant to be lining up with what to preset for the hyperfocal distance on the depth of field scale with this lens. I've read several explanations and am still lost. The f stop scale looks rather small to accurately measure anything. I'm currently using my "eyechromiter" to manually focus on what my table tells me the hyperfocal distance should be. It's bugging me that I can not figure the D.O.F scale out and I would appreciate some assistance to clarify this matter. Kind Regards Jason.

I owned the Canon FD 24 f2.8, so the EF version can't be very different.

The DOF scale has symmetrical f stop markings on both sides of the focus point. For example, if you focus at 10 feet, and the upper f8 mark indicates 15 feet and the lower f8 mark indicates 7 feet, then at f8, subjects that are between 7 and 15 fee should be reasonably sharp.

DOF scale makes setting the hyperfocal distance real easy. If your aperture is F8, simply set (using manual focus) the upper f8 mark at infinity. After thats done, lets say the lower f8 mark falls out at about 5 feet, then all subjects that are at least 5 feet away should be reasonably sharp. For critical photos, I would just use the DOF for 1 stop wider than what I set the lens at (use the DOF scale for f8 while setting the aperture at f11).
