Essential Dutch for Ajax fans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ajax USA : One Thread

I propose that we begin to collect those Dutch words, phrases and sentences essential to the sophisticated Ajax fan. For starters, here's one I just learned from Bastiaan:

gezelligheid: coziness and conviviality; describing the company of good people (e.g. Ajax fans).

yo, this is an other song wich is used if the linesman makes a mistake.

Steek je vlag maar in je reet! en steek je vlag maar in je ree-eet!

It means such as: stick your flag up in your ace! and stick your flag up in your a-ace!

Greetings from holland,

by the way, if you need a translation for some words, you can e-mail me

Allow me to write something about "essential Dutch for Ajax players" in this thread... ;-)

Ajax.nl reports that Petri Pasanen, Andre Bergdølmo, Nikos Machlas, Steven Pienaar, Cristian Chivu and Joey Didulica have passed their Dutch exams - and received their certificates today! About f$%#$ing time for Machlas and Chivu... Their Dutch is... okay. On the other hand: André Bergdølmo's Dutch really blows you away (just like Johnny O'Brien's, by the way. He could teach Dutch to his team-mates).

Anyways: gefeliciteerd, jongens! (= 'congratulations, guys!')

MOKUM is just the name the jews gave to Amsterdam. A name adopted by the Amsterdam folks. It's not a part of Amsterdam.

And I'm very sorry. But name-calling and singing (quite offending) songs IS part of footballsupporters vocabulary. And quite a lot of 'decent' people sing along with them. Just like old folks in Breda lifting their right arm towards Ajax-supporters. It seems horrendous, it doesn't mean shit in fact.

But hey, it's your site.

Translation (this is an English-language forum, by the way):

"A censored version, because that guy who runs the site dropped by whining in my mailbox...."

Was I whining? I thought I was just exercising my rights as publisher. If you don't like it, complain to my boss (don't have one), to my advertisers (don't have any), my publisher (that's me) or just go elsewhere...

"He himself says in Nieuwe Revu that he has an enormous hatred against Feyenoord (?) but he doesn't dare to write that down on the site."

Who? Me? Wrong-o, bucky. Here's the article: http://www.ajax- usa.com/ajax/travel/niew-revu.html. Please point out where I state my hatred toward Feyenoord. You cannot, because I do not hate Feyenoord. There is too much genuine suffering and evil in the world to pretend that evil can be embodied in a football team. I have a low regard for anyone who sings about gassing Jews or dropping bombs on Rotterdam. If you don't like that, go somewhere else.

"Very weak...."

What's weak is pretending to be polite in English while being rude in Dutch.

Zwak hoor....

Word to be thought is "MOKUM" wich is a specific part of Amsterdam where the former stadium -De Meer- was situated. Greetinz to u all in the States who fancy Ajax as well! Ciao Ingmar

Here's an essential one for visitors to the ArenA:

"Vergeet het maar mevrouw. Ik ga niet voor de plee betalen in een voetbalstadion. Trek het u niet persoonlijk aan." (No way, lady. I am not paying for the loo inside a football stadium. Please don't take it personally).

sfeer = the ambiance in the stadium. There has been some problems with the 'sfeer'among the ajax-fans. Everybody says there is no 'sfeer' But it's etting better every game!
