How do I edit mpeg2 files?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Is there an affordable software to edit (cut and merge) MPEG2 files? TMPGEnc works fine for MPEG1 but not for MPEG2. I am trying to convert my Hi8 videos to SVCD, using an AIW 128 pro, MMC 7.0, TMPGEnc and Nero 5.5.

Why don't you edit in some AVI form before encoding to MPEG2??? Editing MPEG is ALWAYS a last resort; for those who have time and resources at leisure, it's always best to edit in the original non- MPEG form. For example in your case (following all capturing basics, of course) you can capture to a HuffYUV or PICMJPEG-codec AVI, edit those, encode with TMPGenc and burn with Nero.

I have used Tmpgenc (version 1a) to edit MPEG2 files without a problem. Use "file"->"MPEG tools". Then "cut/join". Make sure to select "Type" as "MPEG-2 Super Video CD(VBR)" before adding files and doing the editing.

If you do not select "Type" as MPEG-2 you will get a MPEG-1 file output.

Womble (www.womble.com) makes a product called MPG2VCR than can edit MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and MPEG audio. The bad news is that it costs $250. It's a really good product though. It's also possible, I have read, to use TMPGenc to edit MPEG-2 files, but it takes a long time and I never could figure out how to do it. MPG2VCR is frame accurate, which is probably why it costs so much. It's also very quick.

Hi,

TMPGEnc has just released a new version that corrects the problem of editing MPEG2 files. Thank you for your coments

You shouldn't use TMPGenc to edit mpeg2 files if they're already in mpeg2 format because it re-encodes the output file which diminishes quality. Womble doesn't re-encode which is why it's so fast. There are other apps out there that can edit mpeg2 files without re- encoding them. Do a Google search. :)
