E. coli Forces Recall Of 471,000 Pounds Of Beef

Meat Possibly Contaminated By Potentially Deadly Bacteria

WASHINGTON, 3:35 p.m. EDT May 6, 2001 -- A Wisconsin company is recalling nearly a half million pounds of ground beef because of possible contamination by the potentially deadly E-coli bacteria.

The Agriculture Department says that the meat was produced by Emmpack Foods of Milwaukee and distributed nationwide.

It is sold in retail stores in five-pound tubes and is also distributed to institutions in five- to 20-pound boxes.

The ground beef label reads, "Manufactured by Peck Meat Packing" and has a sell-by date of March 22.

E. Coli is really not a big deal. The meat must just be thoroughly cooked.
