Elan in-focus beeper

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have just received an Elan in pretty good condition. The seller claimed everythig worked. I love the beep confirmation of in-focus as I don't have to take my eyes away from my composition to confirm my focus. This is Custom Function 6. I have it set on and the little speaker icon appears in the LCD. But the beep does not sound. The beeper functions in the self-timer mode. Is there something I'm not doing? Any help would be appreciated.

I have owned the original Elan since 1992 and the focus confirmation beeper has never worked. I find beeps irritating so I don't mind its absence. Apparently, Canon neglected to implement it, although the beeper icon is visible in the LCD during use of the PIC modes. CF 6 is only for the self timer and has nothing to do with focus confirmation. Use the AF confirmation icon (little green ball) in the viewfinder to confirm focus.

Pop Photo's review of the Elan (p. 63, July 1992) notes that the Elan has no beeper tone although the manual states otherwise. So, nothing's wrong with your Elan. Go forth and make images!

My Elan doesn't beep on focus either. Which is fine by me, actually, but that's another story. :) As for taking away your eyes from the composition - the in-focus light in the lower right corner of the viewfinder is fairly large. I find it's possible to see it out of the corner of my eye without looking away from the scene.

I'm told that EOS 100 models (the non North American versions of the same camera) do include beep on focus, but I can't confirm this as I haven't got one.

As "Puppyface" says, it appears the manual is in error.
