comfrey roots ? and thank you Cindy

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Hi, got the comfrey roots today,a big thank you to Cindy. The stevia cuttings will be on the way in about two weeks(want to make sure they are hardy enough to make it through the mail). Now about the comfrey roots, should I plant them in gallon containers? How deep, shade or full sun,lot of water or a little? Another question, rabbit feed fresh or dry? I don't want to make the rabbits sick. I feed mine rabbit pellets and hay. Any good sites about using comfrey as feed? I can't seem to find much on the internet about using comfrey for feed, any links would be appreciated. Thank you all for the help. Daryll

I plant mine in the ground in full sun, partial shade is o.k. too. It can handle rather dry conditions, so water if it looks droopy. I don't know about rabbits, but the throw them over the fence to the chickens, and I take it dried in capsules medicinely.

Doreen, yours will be mailed tomorrow. God Bless

Daryll -

Rabbits can eat it either way, but I dry it anyway, so when they get some, its usually dry. Sometimes, though, I do feed straight from the plant... Depends on if I think of it or not, lol!

Pellets AND hay?? Which pellets do you use? How much do they cost? Always looking for more inexpensive feed...

I use pellets with the hay in them, as we have no place to store bales right now. I feed COB (corn, oats, barley)with it - oats give them nice shiny coats. Also has molasses in it for digestion. Used to feed just plain oats, but too much wound up UNDER the cages, lol -

Hi Sue, I use regular rabbit feed pellets from the farm store, about $7.50 for a 50# bag,the hay is in 800# rolls about $20.00 and I cover it with a tarp. I give them corn and oats about once a week,I have the rabbits above the chickenrun. Any spilled feed the chickens gobble up. I have one buck and four does and breed them about every two months,A Cuban guy in town buys 8 week old rabbits for $5.00 each. That more than pays for the feed with a little left over. I am thinking of using the comfrey to cut down on the pellets,I still can't find much on using comfrey for feed. Just trying to be more self sufficent. Daryll

Daryll -

Try the pet stores... Ours will take them at 6 weeks, and pay $7 each.

We have worm bins under ours... can't have the chickens just yet (in a trailer...) Don't have the room for the round bales, either, so I feed COB and hay pellets as the regular diet (same price ea. as you pay for your pellets), with other stuff thrown in - whatever I have on hand.

Sorry I missed your other post about the web sites, but I don't have a good one. Usually get my info from vet books and rabbit breeders... Haven't really had to look for a site -

Hi.... I am interested in obtaining some comfrey roots. All that is going on makes me realize the need to become self sufficiant. Any help I can get in this direction is appreciated.

Hi Cindy, It's a year later and I'm looking for comfrey roots. Do you have any to spare? Thanks. Also, do they grow in South Florida?

M A Gibbs I used to have a comfrey patch when I lived in the Caribbean. It didn't grow as hardy as up north but it grew .They do get crown rot pretty easy in climates with warm humid nights .

In south Florida I would think if you dug out a spot and added a bag of composted soil and mixed it with the sandy soil it would do real well.

Dear Rabbit owners.

I don't know how comfrey affects rabbits/chickens, but I do know that it is NOT recommended for human consumption. I don't remember the exact reasons, but they are deadly and from enough sources that I would stay clear of consuming this herb myself. As for rabbits or chickens, I don't know. Animals have a much different system than we humans.

Having said that. If you know some reason to feed this to the rabbits or chickens, I would be interested in hearing it. Also Chickens & rabbits really like dandylions. Try it.
