Many Alamogordo residents found themselves doing whatever they were doing in the dark for a time Friday night, when the power went off just after 9:30 p.m. A third of the city's middle section - about 6,500 customers - was affected by the outage, which lasted 25 minutes, said David Gottula of Texas-New Mexico Power Company. He added that one of the city's three large substation transformers, located on Eddy Street near the former White Sands Forest Products, shut down.

It was a new transformer, Gottula said. "We had just put a load on it that day." The problem was not computer-related, he added.

As of Saturday afternoon, the specific cause of the malfunction remained unknown, but Gottula said TNM crews were still at the scene trying to pinpoint the cause.
