Fissures

In fissures such as the one in Antelope Valley, California, which was due to the overpumping of groundwater, approximately how long does it take for the fissure to form? Does it all happen at once, or does it happen progressively over time?

Fissures occur ovver time. Fissure eruptions should not be considered in isolation, because they are also intimately related to Hawaiian eruptions. However, the unique character of fissure eruptions warrants a seperate description here.
