Snake!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Yet another problem. I was wandering around in the house yesterday, minding my own business when I stepped on the tail of what I would guess to be a fairly large snake. Talk about breaking my train of thought!! Anyway, we had this problem several times last year. I don't know where they are coming into the house. We have mice pretty bad again, do every time the commercial broiler houses up the road are emptied out. I guess the snakes are coming in behind the vinyl siding on the house, following the mouse holes.

The question is this: Does any one know how to trap this damned snake? I put out still more mouse poison in the hopes that he will eat a poisoned mouse and die too, or at least decide to go somewhere the mice didn't give him such a bad case of indigestion. I'm really getting weary of this, and this whole place.

I'm not sure how to get rid of the snake, but would like to urge you to do something else in the meantime....

Call the department of Ag in your area and complain!!! Let them know that this happens every year, and what you said about the broiler houses. I would bet they would be interested in finding out if other neighbors had the same problems... They might even (I know... I don't look good in blue either, lol) investigate the practices over there.

There is something to be said for not endangering the public with these big corporations... If its put to the bureaucrats that way, maybe they will at least think about it...

What kinda snake? Don't know of any traps--kitty cats work good on snakes and rodents,if you don't mind them showing them to you before they eat them.

Somewhere I read this....maybe Countryside mag several years ago....try Pine needles and branches all around your house ! Or anything that a snake would not like to slither over and would get hurt by - briars maybe ?? I don't think I would sleep well wondering if a snake was IN my house. Nan.

It was a chicken snake I'm sure. They are also called rat snakes. We had one in here last year that was about 3 feet long after we chopped his shrimpy little head off. I have 12 cats, but they don't "do" larger snakes, apparently, and do only so so on the mice. I haven't seen him again. Maybe he decided that something as big as me stepping on him wasn't any fun and left. Maybe. Last year I had several panic attacks over the first snake. This year I'm just too tired to panic. Maybe this summer I'll finally manage to rake up enough money to move somewhere else.

I'm not a big fan of snakes but if they are rat snakes rather than the poisonous variety I would count my blessings. If the snakes aren't leaving big piles of poo for you to step in I'd leave em alone and say thanks for killing the mice.I'm a bit weird that way I guess. When we had the great earwig invasion at my house I wanted to turn loose house gekkos.(had a bunch of them in my hut on Timor)The wife vetoed me and discovered that Spectracide everywhere was less desirable than the earwigs. She also discovered that spreading diazanon all over the yard kills ducks.Think maybe you and the reptiles can have a truce until your mice are gone?

-- greg (gsmith@tricountyi.net), May 02, 2001.

I don't know, Greg. I get really bad heart palpatations when I step on one, or worse yet TOUCH one with my bare hand. Mice affect me almost the same way though. I haven't seen him again. I'm still hoping that being stepped on was more than he cared for and left.

Snakes! God put this "thing" between man and snakes! I'm livin up to what He has planned out for me. Ya'll know---the old slimy serpent would bruse our heel whilst we kinda mashed his'n old ugly haid. I hate'm with a passion and have built a little device to fry'm by electricity. [It'll also work on mice, rats.] As long as they stay outta my way-I won't go after'm usually. I'm too lazy to fight'm very much--not anything to do with me respecting their right to life. If they don't like it lett'm move off my property!

Green--BTW-ya'll raise those little rat terriers, doncha? Old Jesse James my little'n, killed every snake he came upon. Unfortunately he died in a natural gas pipeline leak about 4 years ago. Sure do miss'm. Old hoot. Matt.24:44

this may be hard to believe, however snakes have a natural fear of cats. cats are one of few natural preditors to snakes. having cats around your place would control your rodent population. the snakes are there because a food source exists. so remove the mice, burn incence and remove the smell of mice from your home. good luck.

p.s. cats also kill large amounts of reptiles each year

My dogs manage to keep them out of and away from my house. However, I would like to know how to keep them out of my hen house. I've tried re-building it with the tiniest of mesh (only for the opossums to tear it up) to standing guard at dusk with my 22 (that lasted less than a week). I'm probably just gonna get rid of the chickens unless somebody has a suggestion. Back to your original question (sorry, I got a little carried away), Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers and mine do a great job of killing snakes, opossums, squirrels, etc. Hey, maybe I'll build a dog run around the hen house!

Kathleen! I hate snakes, mice and rats. I built a device for rat and mice killin. They can be used to kill snakes as well and you don't have to stand around and watch'm either. The plans are on my website which you can download for free. www.oldhootgibson.tripod.com is the web address.

Have fun build'n and roastin those nasty serpants. Pleae be careful and follow all the directions and warnings. old hoot. Matt.24:44

Today I went out side to feed my baby rabbits, I have eight of them. When I got to the cage four rabbits were dead and two were missing. In the back of the cage was about a five foot long chicken snake who had goten in the cage and couldn't get out. I about crapped all over my self. I got the bb gun and capped the snake in the head twice. The snake had swallowed two of the rabbits whole. I really dont know how to get rid of them but I have heard that you can by glass eggs at the feed store and put them out. The snake will eat the egg and won't be able to digest it. This will surely kill him.

I have been having problems with snakes also. I scattered moth balls around the house. Wished I would have put some in my garage though!! I was going to do some weed eating and picked up an electric cord that I had on the floor and there he was!! I ran to town and bought more moth balls!! I heard moth balls work. I don`t know what kind of snake it was though. I took off too fast. I am very scared of snakes.

I just saw a snake sitting on top of the bush plant in front of my house last night. And it is still there today. It's about 3 ft. long brown color. Is that poisonous? I called some company who gets rid of snakes or other animals and they told me they charge $125 to do the work. But the lady was nice enough to give me advice. She said that if there's a bird nest nearby it will stay there for a while until there's no more birds to eat. After that, it will move on. But it's giving me the creeps everytime I see it. So, I will try some of your advice. Hopefully it will work. Wish me luck!

Hrm reading some of your posts have disgusted me. Yes it can be very nerve wrecking having "slimy" snakes "slithering" all over your house. Is this the snakes fault for finding a nice shelter with a very strong supply of food? NO. Your home is perfect for these reptiles, and they did nothing wrong to you. How about you stop bitching about it, and fix your holes.. Seems the obvious solution to me. And "chopping" any of there heads off? Wishing them to swallow a poisoned rat?! What kind of person are you? Let me ever find you i'll fucking slice off your head. How would you like that? Not good? Hmmm how about you stop being so god damn ignorant, and be more caring. Go to hell.

-- Roger Davis (cheapultimagoods@earthlink.net), November 22, 2003.

I was too angry to continue reading, but I finally did. More people saying they have a passionate hate for snakes. What the fuck did they do to you? Nothing? Maybe because you have insecurities, and cannot act like a normal person? And the dumbass with the rabbit hutch. Its not the fucking snakes fault. I bet your the dumbfuck who built the cage huh? Well its YOUR fault for A.) Building the cage improperly *( Knowing what area you live in with snakes and such, you should have built it without your head up your ass)* B.) Where the hell was the cage again? Your backyard? Or Garage? What a dumbass! You obviously dont give a flying fuck about your Rabbits, and dont care about animals in general. Out of anger instead of letting the snake live, you yet again took another animals life. Because you could'nt control your emotions and built a half-ass cage. So 4 innocent rabbits are already dead, yet you Murder another INNOCENT animal making that 5. Was the snake innocent? Yep, it was your dumbass fault that the snake got in. The snake was merely hungry, and did not deserve to die. You should not have the right to own animals, because you are a murderer. This whole thread is concerning a "passionate hate" towards an animal. Yes we all prefer one animal towards another, if we like animals in general. No need to be stupid. To The Original Forum Poster: If you have such a passionate hate towards these animals, why is it instead of actually correcting the problem, you get on your computer and post about it to dozens of strangers? If you have such a passionate hate towards snakes, why is it you refused to pay the animal exterminator, and murdered the first innocent snake. You all are hateful people, and your actions should send you to hell. And all you dumbfucks referring to biblical Versus's, the bible states we should be kind to Gods Creatures, and care for them. Yes we can "kill" for food or supplies, but killing is different than murder. I'd fucking slay all of you poser- religious people.

And to the dumbass who cannot form a single proper sentence, and sounds like some dumbass from a farm. Hey farmer, get off the computer, and go grow some corn you simple fuck

-- Roger Davis (cheapultimagoods@earthlink.net), November 22, 2003.

To Roger Davis, or whatever your real name is, after reading your Posts, I soon realized what a mentally sick person your are, you talk about how horrible it is to kill a snake, and how hateful everyone is, towards animals, and that everyone will go to Hell, but then you go on to say how you are going to cut people’s heads off and slay everyone. Are you for real?? I can tell you this, GOD will not send a single person to hell for killing snakes and mice, but he will send you to hell, “Roger” because of the anger and rage you have inside. No one on this board said they hate animals, they just want to get rid of snakes and mice that invaded there house, and if it requires killing them, so be it. I feel sorry for the guy you lost the rabbits to that snake, I would have kill that snake to, but I would not keep pet rabbits in a cage outside, it’s cruel to the rabbits, if you are going to have bunny rabbit as a pet, keep them inside. Roger you need help!
