FORT LAUDERDALE -- Almost 11,000 customers in the downtown were without power for up to 20 minutes Friday morning after a transformer malfunctioned , Florida Power & Light said.

The 10:17 a.m. outage froze computer screens, halted elevators between floors and darkened homes, offices and bathrooms briefly.

Betty Marsenison, a spokeswoman from FP&L, said the power loss was concentrated in the downtown area. She blamed it on a transformer malfunction at a substation.

FP&L is still investigating what caused the transformer to break down.

For most, the outage was just a blip, Marsenison said. For the rest it lasted no more than 20 minutes. Power was restored to the entire area by 10:37 a.m.
