Loral Space & Communications has announced that its Telstar 6 satellite experienced a component failure on its primary central processing unit (CPU) at 03:30EDT/08:30BST on Sunday.
At the time of the outage, customers were relocated to Loral Skynet or other Loral Global Alliance satellites whilst the satellite, which carries a total 24 C-band and 28 Ku-band transponders at 93 degrees West, switched to its backup CPU and returned to normal operation.
Loral Skynet began restoring customers on the satellite, whose footprint covers US, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and parts of Canada and Latin America, at 06:00EDT on Monday.
PanAmSat also experienced hardware failure of the spacecraft control processor aboard its Galaxy IIIR satellite, which was manufactured back in 1995, at the weekend. Both Loral and Boeing, through its new owners, Hughes, is continuing in its investigations.

Satellites have problems when China is angry with us. Could it be Loral’s black communication box was missing when Loral’s rocket exploded over China in the late 1990’s and never recovered the box? A week later a Galaxy satellite went out of commission after the rocket explosion in China.
