Porn(social issues)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

We've been hooked up to the net since Nov 99, in that time I've had almost no porn or "bad" e-mails. Just in the last couple of weeks, all that has changed. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, and I have a feeling it is coming from one of the forums. Probably just someone getting the address from there. That was one reason I changed my email address on the CS forum but now it has started again with this address so I may change it too. I'll let you know though if I do! Some people have sick minds.

I imagine that greenspun must sell email addys to companies as lists. I don't know. I do know that yahoo just made a big deal with porn companies, so if it's at your yahho box, that might explain it. Once these companies get your email, they just send you stuff automatically. I don't think there is too much that can be done about it.

if you've had a pop-up window as you transversed the world wide web your info was automatically scavenged and passed on.

I have created new e-mail sites and with-in 30 days have at least 2 porn type messages.

earthlink uses a thing called spaminator. it works 75% of the time.

Yup.... I've had them too...

Yahoo announced - thanks to a very large percentage of their users writing in and telling them - that they WILL NOT embrace the porn industry for new revenue sources. I guess writing to SOME folks, will work....

Anyway - there is also a problem in that most security and privacy policies are no more than words. Once your card number is used on the web, not one single company can ultimately GUARANTEE that your information will not be 'acquired' by others - even if they do everything possible to prevent it.

Also, remember, yahoo was hit by hackers, as have many other servers...

All you can do is start using a new addy, and report it to one of the agencies.

I'm being spammed too.I do think it is related to posting on CS.Most of the emails are get rich quik.Make money at home deals. They really stepped up when someone posted something on that subject on CS.I think I only got two invites to porno sites as well as ads for sex aids.Just can't be left alone ANYWHERE not even in cyberspace.

The sexual type emails I get are all on hotmail, which is a private address. I believe that MSN is selling our addresses. I don't use that address for anything other than personal correspondence, and it doesn't get out to very many people. Since I don't believe they are giving the address out, that leaves only MSN.

You should have a soley personal email address and I use at least 2 others. 1 for correspondence w/ business or people I don't know and another for correspondence w/ companies who I am sure or not sure will sell the address. Posting on any sites like this or Countryside that can be viewed by the public, will eventually get you spammed. I have 3 hotmail addresses and my personal one is uncorrupted for over 3 years. The other semi private one I use (survivors) has recently gotten the penis enlargement emails, but I believe I accidentally used the address to sign up for some free products or promos and I knew they would sell it, I just meant to use my other junky address.

I didn't get porn sent to my email box until after posting at ABOUT.COM forums. It got so bad that I couldn't let my children use my account anymore and set up their own.

Hopefully, this addy will stay clean if I just use it for personal correspondence and, of course, you guys.
