What is exactly land subsidence and what causes it?

-- Joseph T. Sterbank (linus112@aol.com), April 23, 2001

land subsidence is a gentle movement by which a broad area of the crust sinks relative to the evevation of the crust of surrounding areas in the region, Subsidence is induced in part by the additional weight of sediments on the crust and in part by tectonic mechanisms, such as regional downfaulting.
