How can the home life affect the way the child does with tests?

Melanie. My thought is that home life can impact students as test takers,. but maybe the question should be "How can I help students who have tough home lives, to do better on tests?" Much is being written about resiliency and the building of same. So my questions would be, what can I as a teacher, influence. Possibly some of the following: preparation for test taking, a safe environment; a strong connection (relationship) with the child; being clear about where I'm going when I teach prior to testing; setting high standards, regardless of the diversity or economic status of my students; thinking up, instead of thinking down; being positive, and choosing not to frustrate over what I cannot control.
