genetic (poultry) breed article in past issue

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I took a few of my recent CS mags to the hospital for a friend to read and they disapeared. I do hope some one read them. Am looking for the article (I HOPE IT WAS IN CS) about a place that was stockpiling endangered breeds of animals an poultry. I have room for an endangered breed and have thought about it for years.

My incubator will hatch it if it is fertile and I do not loose birds to preditors. If you remember the article in CS or remember it from some where else, Please let me know. I want to say it was Late last fall (2000). thanks

I don't know about stockpiling animals...but the "American Livestock Breeds Conservancy" is keeping track of the livestock and poultry breeds that are endangered. The only stockpiling I've heard of is in England where they are freezing plant seeds from around the world to protect them from extinction. Enjoy your life.

Orgainic Gardening had a big article with pics about endangered poultry and all the sources for them, but it was a few years ago. I should have it in the pile of magazines, I know I have gone back to that issue several times. If someone finds it in the Countryside issue, I could try to scan and email it to you, I have them all.

Here is a site that lists some poultry organizations: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/BRKRare.html

I do hope you find a breed to raise. We have several rare/heritage breeds are we really enjoy having them. Good luck.
