Chainsaw engine question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I have tossed around the idea of taking a chainsaw engine and mating it to a little foot powered scooter. I know there are companies that already make these, but I figured it would cost half as much, and be twice as fun. What will I need to do this besides a foot scooter and the chainsaw engine? Will a 2.2 ci. (36cc) have enough power to work? What would be the easiest most reliable power delivery method to the drive wheel? I have everything pretty much worked out except the transfer of power to the rear wheel. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I would like to use readily available parts.

thanks,

Joe

I'm no expert...but I would think that a small engine would do fine. I would mount a soft roller skate wheel (or a wide rubber wheel from the hardware store) to the engine. Then mount the engine on a pivot over the rear scooter wheel (engine rotating to the back of the scooter) with a sring that keeps it about an inch away. Mount a footplate to the top front of the engine. When you want to go, press down with the heel of your foot and hit the gas. (Wear a helmet!)

On the other side of the engine pivot, I would put a version of the typical "fender brake". When you need to brake press down with your toe.

If your email is correct, I will send you a sketch...meanwhile, I'm sure a dozen people will say..."no, no, no...do this" (draw, draw, draw)...

This is a great place for ideas.

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one! Pick me! If you don't mind using a push scooter with larger wheels (12"), it's a piece of cake: Use a 12" rear bicycle wheel with a cog on it, replace the chain saw's cutting chain with a standard bicycle chain and add a throttle cable up to the handlebars. (Bolt the chainsaw, minus the cutting bar, to the rear of the scoot's footboard.) And don't forget to CHECK THE BRAKES! Ya-Hooooooooo!

I typed in the wrong email address.........eickhoffj@yahoo.com is my correct one. I like the idea of using the bicycle setup. The only obstacle is attaching a sprocket to the chainsaw, and finding a chain of the correct size.

-- Joe Eickhoff (eickhoffj@yahoo.com), April 11, 2001.

I have actually been thinking about attaching a chainsaw engine to 1 of my mountain bikes. I don't know if it has enough power to turn the large wheel? Can anyone help me? Anyway I figure if you can get a sprockt that is about an inch shorter than the rear wheel and make a longer rear axle it would work. Mount the engine right ahead of the rear wheel and add a bicycle brake set.Watch out it will accelerate like crazy! Top speed may not be what was desired though.

Joe,

I was just thinking this morning about mounting a chainsaw engine to a multi-speed bicycle. I was first thinking a regular bike, with derailleur, etc - but then I started thinking about using a 3-speed bike (I have always wondered how they worked - I think they use a planetary gear system like an automatic transmission does) - then I started wondering if I could build a chainsaw engine powered recumbant "vehicle"...

You should be able to mount a chain to the sprocket attached to the centrifigal clutch on the chainsaw engine (I believe chainsaw "chain", ie, bladed chain, is the same pitch, etc as bike chain) - if not, find a busted multispeed bike and pull the sprocket assembly apart on the back wheel, and use the smalled sprocket - you will probably need to weld it to the clutch casing or attached sprocket.

If you want to keep pedaling, simply add another large sprocket to the front pedal area - you might need to extend the pedals out a bit.

My idea was to build a chainsaw engine powered vehicle, and not have pedal power at all - just a larger gas tank...

This is more of a commentary then an answer, but I took a tiny girls bike (the "Giant Puddin'") and mounted a Homelite Super 2 on the crossmember right in front of the seat. I then machined a new clutchbell so I could mount a 17 tooth bike sprocket to it. This is because while the chainsaw chain pitch may be the same as bike chain, the sprocket is not compatable. Also, my previous attempts to braze a tiny sprocket from a copy machine had ruined the temper of the bell and made it wear away too fast. Anyway, I punched out the roller bearing from the stock bell and pressed it into the machined Al one and it works. The bike chain from the bell then goes to the crank, where I put a 34 tooth sprocket. On the otherside of the crank I put a 17 tooth sprocket which then goes to the 16" wheel via a 10" road bike sprocket. While unnecessarily complex, it does produce a top speed of 31.7 mph, I think it has some more left but I need a longer straight stretch of road. The total gear reduction is around 9:1, something like 11-12:1 would be better. The engine is around 30cc (2ci?) It gets a little squirrly around 25 mph though. good luck stan

I built an entire scooter from scratch with angle iorn and bolts. i first used a small toro weedeater motor at about 8 to1 ratio driveing an 8 inch wheel using the stock clutch. i then built a jack shaft so i had 16 to 1 ratio. this is all belt driven by the way. i tried it out again but the clutch sliped to much. i by passed the clutch and clocked out at about 9 mph. it had no hill climbing abillity. i bolted a homelite in and that helped alot. it maxed at about 15. i am now putting a 61 cc mculla chainsaw on it . it likes a rollout of about 14inches per revoultion of the motor. the clucth stock will work fine. go with a go kart rear wheel, dont use the stupid friction drive idea. dont use belt. chain only

-- Larboc foo (Larboc@hotmail.com), April 29, 2002.

I came across this page because I was searching for answers about chain sizes. It turn out I’m doing the same thing you guys are doing. I have a snow blower motor welded it the frame of my mountain bike. I went to hook up the chain and the sprocket off the clutch teeth wont work with the sprocket off the bike. The chain won’t work. Well I post some pictures and the web address when I’m done.

As to the above go for a chainsaw motor.. and use a direct drive system for power.. chain... I am currently going to put a chainsaw motor on a scooter.. and can anyone tell me if they have done it and what problems they came across. Does the shaft that spins the cog on motor bend under pressure. And how do you build a supercharger for a chainsawmotor thanks help appreciated....

-- George (Georgelupton@email.com), June 05, 2002.

I used a scooter from Wal-mart($39) with the 12" tires. I replaced the rear tire with a similar one from a 12" childs bike being it already had a sprocket on. First I tried a 30cc chain saw with a small sprocket welded on the clutch bell along with a 17 tooth sprocket welded on the small tire sprocket. It was geared way too high. I found a small (fist sized) gearbox from a pitney bowes coalator with a 16:1 ratio. The primary side is belt driven with a idler pulley which is spring loaded(forcing tension on the belt). Secondary side HAS to be chain driven as I tried a belt setup and found that they will ALWAYS slip. I swapped motors and now use a 29cc leaf blower motor (clutch on the chainsaw can't handle the load.) Chain alignment and tension is very critical. My 13 year old son knocks the chain off at least twice a day and am now thinking about using a belt and sprockets similar to a timing belt on a car. Top speed is about 20 mph and it makes it up all the hills around here. After much experimenting I believe that with the 12" tires the best ratio is about 17:1. Have plans on a 40+ cc motor with some sort of wide timing belt. Plan on spending many hours!

-- Ray Mercer (wildnbig@adelphia.net), June 06, 2002.

has any one used a lawnmower engine if so I woul be interested to hear. As to the above what do you mean that the chainsaw clutch couldn't handle the load how so??

-- georg (Georgelupton@email.com), June 07, 2002.

I am currently building a chain saw bike. I purchased a bicycle disk hub from an online bike supplier. You can see what it looks like : http://www.nashbar.com/profile_moreimages.cfm?category=85&subcategory= 1107&sku=2996 I had a wheel and spokes added at a local bike shop. I then mounted a 72 tooth #35 sprocket where the disk would normally mount. I had an adapter machined to fit onto my chainsaw crankshaft and then installed a standard go kart centriugal clutch. I am in the process of attaching a jackshaft to achieve the correct gear ratio. This is my second chainsaw bike and much more costly. Good luck!

I came across this page looking for a way to hook a weedeater motor to a razor scooter. as for the cahinsaw scooter i think you need a custom racing clutch and sproket from racing go-carts they will hold up to over 80 horsepower and will not wear down i hope this helped and if anyone has any anwers to my delema e-mail me at jmitcham_al@yahoo.com

-- josh (jmitcham_al@yahoo.com), June 30, 2002.

just keep in mind that what ever you decide to do, keep with a rollout of around 14 inches per revoultion for larger engines and 12 inches per revoultion for smaller engines. most smaller chainsaws and all weedeater motor clutches will not grab the clutch bell tight enough to use the full potentiall of the motor. if using a weedeater motor you should just use a direct drive motor. i would also use chain only on the wheel sproket to jackshaft and a small belt from the motor to the jackshaft. another thought is to use a shaft drive. good luck all.

-- larboc foo (larboc@hotmail.com), July 07, 2002.

about the guy wanting to use a lawnmower engine. these motors are built to run with the shaft pointing up and down. if you turn them so the shaft sticks horizontily oil will not get to the piston and will ruin the motor the only exxeption are two-stroke engines (i.e lawn boys)

Just wanted to post a little something - kinda an update. It has been a while since I have done anything with my bike, but I decided to go electric, instead of engine powered. The reasons behind why I am doing it this way are many, but mainly it is noise (little with an electric motor), and wanting to have a challenge (while it is challenging to mount an engine to a bike, no doubt, it is more challenging to get a motor to do the job). So far I have built my frame, in a recumbent fashion, from two bikes (a women's 26 inch 10 speed and a girl's 20 inch BMX). I am still in the process of mounting a motor (I have the motor, but I haven't did much since moving into a new home, so it has taken me a while to find time). The motor I have is a 90 VDC PM motor, with a 1/2" shaft. My drive sprocket is a 9 tooth ANSI #40 1/2 inch pitch sprocket, with 1/2 inch bore, that I had face-ground at a machine shop to fit the 10 speed chain (10 speed chain is thinner than BMX chain - both are 1/2 inch pitch, though) - know that #40 sprockets will work, but need to be professionally ground to preserve temper and fit the chain. If you go to a bearing/belt/chain supplier, they will have #40 parts - this is standard industrial size chain - but the width is pretty wide, so the grinding is necessary. Don't ask for bike chain or sprockets, they won't have what you want, and will look at you funny. Bike stores likewise will not have the right part for mounting on shafts. There is an online store called "Tulsa Engine Warehouse" that sells these same style sprockets, pre-ground and everything - but they cost more than buying just the sprocket and having it ground (I managed to get mine done free at the shop). I will post again as the project goes on, and I have pictures that I will post on my site.

I am building a motorized mountain bike. I have an old homelite pressure washer motor on it and I am thinking of friction drive. Can anybody show me some of their plans? I was thinking of mounting the motor on the back of the bike, then attaching a pully to the clutchbell. Then, I would have another pulley on the friction roller and drive it like that. Is this idea ok? or would chain drive be better. Any suggetions you have would help. Thanks.

-- cRaSh-N-bUrN (HaNg_TeN@white-star.com), September 08, 2002.

do you want to sell me the pressure washer pump? i have been looking for one for along time. is it the one of the 2 strokes? personaly i wouldnt go friction drive. you wont be happy with it. allthough i have never heard of the belt idea, it sound like a very good one

-- paul dice (larboc@hotmail.com), September 12, 2002.

I am doing the same thing-I have a BMX bike that I mounted a bracked to the seatpost that holds a chainsaw. The saw is upright and I welded a 2nd gear steel sprocked to the outside of the saw's centrifugal clutch. The chain then leads down to the rear wheel, then over to the pedals(I cut off the pedals and put 3" bolts so I could get it going, and be able to get my legs out of the way while the front sprocket was spinning.) It works great but I was cutting a path for the chain and cut into the gas tank- My only advice is making SURE that ALL of the angles on the chain are the same or it will work its way off the drive system-GOOD LUCK

-- Shawn NeVille (neville_inc@yahoo.com), November 24, 2002.

Me and my mate mounted a chainsaw to a kids' bike. There's pics at http://sc2.150m.com/bueflame3/htm .

We removed the clutch, welded a trick nut to the clutch nut, and screwed that onto the driveshaft. We deflated the wheel slightly, attached the engine with many bolts and bits of box section, and attached a throttle control (bike brake lever) to the handlebars. We kept the front brake. The compression dump lever (the one you flick to start the engine) is attached to a piece of wire. Start the bike with the compression off, then you pull the wire once the bike is moving to give more compression and hence more power. It works well, we used a trick nut with a very nice texture and it's quite grippy. Unless of course it's wet, then it doesn't grip.

We could cover the roller with a rubber sleeve, that might give more grip in the dry, but will definitely slip a lot more in the wet.

I'm going to put some more pics up on the site today.

yes it certainly will have enough power to propell you with a little friendly push to get it going from you.i built one out of a 25cc wipper snipper engine and it works fine it actually goes pretty quick. The easiest way to drive it would be to remove the cluth and go down to your local machine shop and get them to make you a knurled shaft which would run directly on the rear wheel but make sure when you have it made that you can install a support bearing on the other end so it doesn't snap off your crank shaft.

Nevermind those answers. Go with your 36CC engine and since your using a razor style scooter i would ise a spindle drive sysem (friction). if you want more info and a look at almost a hundres homemade scooters go here: http://fullspeed.to/scooterworld ilook at the messae board for tons of info. dont foret to look in the homemade scooter section too for almost 100 scooters. Youll find TONS of info. Thanx.

-- Simon Conway (dragoncast77@hotmail.com), February 11, 2003.

If you want better preformance go with a chain and sproket. A belt creats more friction on parts because it needes to be tight to work. It will also make heat if not tight enough the clutch is already hot enough as it is from sliping, and it will slip. if you go with a chainsaw motor you will have to put a new sproket on. A CHAINSAW SPROKET WILL NOT FIT A BIKE CHAIN. A chainsaw sproket has groves in it and a normal chain sproket has spikes. So you will have to improvise. A chainsaw runs at higher a RPM than most weed wacker motors. So it is better. You can mount a chainsaw on a bracket shaped like a rectangle, made out of angle iron, with two self centering ball bearings on one end and the saw on the other.

chainsaw##### bearings angle iron rectangle frame

the chainsaw is pointing with the W where the clutch is and the saw bar, the thing that the chain normaly rides on, shown as ####, you don't want the chain to rub on the bar. the bar gets mounted to the angle iron. DON'T use the hole bar 3 inches past the frame will do.

# #00 # is the bar, looking down it the long # 0 way the rectangle frame too, IT NEEDS 0 TO BE MOUNTED THIS WAY! 0 IS THE MOUNT ^^^^^^^^^^^ ^ is the angle iron this mounting system is better because you can tighten the chain like you would on the chain saw normaly. Bearing is where the bearing is. put a rubber wheel on a shaft, shaft diamiter based on inside diamiter of bearing, it should be a snug fit. then mount a sproket to that shaft, out side the bearing. Number 41 chain will work on bike sproket but the best setup. then mount on bike it can be front wheel drive or rear wheel drive.

"most reliable power delivery method to the drive wheel"

-Chain- you get the most power - but it may be a lot harder to make

-V-belt - easy to make - slips & loss of power

- friction wheel - easy-est to make - more reliable - some loss of power

"I have everything pretty much worked out except the transfer of power to the rear wheel"

same here

I have some weed eater motors and chain saw motors and want to make a motorized bike - but I need to now how to gear it - if you can stop a weed eater with you hand how is it going to power a bike - I know it works but I need more info - one place said I would have to get up to 18mph before it would work - thats more than a little hard to do on a gravel road - and what about hills - any web sites with - how to pages - thanks

-- will (astro_van_1985@yahOO.cOm), March 11, 2003.

I tried to make a bike with a weed eater motor - with a direct drive setup - friction wheel - and never was able to get it started - my guess is that the bike wheel is not spinning fast enough to start the motor - I think I need to use a smaller wheel - might use the motor and mount on a scooter

Next will be a chainsaw motor with the clutch and chain drive - I hope that works

yea, verily yea, everyone needs either giant rear sprokets or major gear reduction of of the engine. power edgers have a big built-in drop-like a power of 6:1 or so. with an off-engine number like that, a 12" tire mounter with mountain bike sprokets is all ya need, so here's a parts list:

-a lot of time -a 12" weel get-up -a ganked mtn bike sproket -a weedeater edger at about 25cc's (or go for gold w/50-60cc's of chainsaw and have fun rigging a gear reduce) -a frame to your liking (can cut and bolt and mod. that 12" bike you stole the tire from) -a good sense of humor -talents in the ancient african art of ghetto rigging

how fast might a 21.2cc mcculloch leaf blower engion go?

-- david (keyboard100@aol.com), April 26, 2003.

i have been working on an old 12 inch tire scooter that i put a trimmer motor on and it would pull me at 25 mph of flat terrain , i put a 9 tooth on the clutch and an 50 tooth on the wheel, i need to have a larger sprocket on the rear though, this set up work ok for the little ones under 70 pounds but me at 175 pounds i would have to push it off, well we finally wore the bronze bushing out of the clutch as it would never really get a good bite, it always slipped on me, so i am now thinking about changeing the clutch setup with a riding mower type system useing pulleys, a small pully on the motor and a large one on the wheel and oversized belt and a third pulley for tension to take the slack out of the belt when u want to take offi dont know how this will work yet, another clutch method would be to put the engine on a pivot and be able to raise and lower the engine onto the tire for the drive it would have to be spindle drivin and u could not ride it when the road is wet... keep on tinkering

-- david (keyboard100@aol.com), May 05, 2003.

to hook up a throttle to your gas motor, just find an old gear shift lever from a 10 speed bike that has a solid cable. mount the lever next to the hand grip on the handle bar close enough so you can use your thumb to activate the throttle. the solid cable allows you to push up or pull down without the cable flexing. you won't even need a return spring. push up the lever, more gas ,push down the lever less gas. the carb butterfly will have a spring that will close the gas if you let go of it . i put a 31cc gas edger motor on an extreme scooter with full suspension that has 12 inch tires. i mounted an axel peg to the crank shaft, use a friction drive set up. i also changed the intake to a rear reed valve set up, this set up allows the engine to reach higher rpm. i mounted a hp exhaust and a hp carberator. i also added a rocket key in the fly wheel to advance timing. THIS IS ONE FAST HOMEMADE SCOOTER. it starts super easy and the ride is smooth because of the full suspension. I have 4 boys and they all have store bought scooters of various types. we all like my homie the best because it is fast and way cool and i made it for less than $200.00

I have been working on my scooter for quite soem time now, and I have the solution to changing the sprocket out fromt he chainsaw. I have the CNC commands available to anyone who wants them for 1$. These commands are very simple, and can be given to any machine shop to produce the perfect sprocket to mount on the back wheel. If anyone wants the codes, email me and I will send them to you. The sprocket is 1/4" thick, 7 1/2" wide, and has 40 teeth. I am currently working on the plans for a 50 toothed sprocket which will greatly increase power. This particular one pulls me (150lbs) at 30mph (scary shit), and can climb hills quite nicely.

Mounting your engine to the frame is tricky, and varies depending on your scooter, so I couldnt help you there.

just put the motor on the back of your scooter and get a bike chain that is small enough to go around the rear wheel and back to the motor but big enough to rotate. The bike went out of control and the chainsaw came loose off the bike. I think the duct tape did not hold. Anyways the chainsaw chain also sliced up my sisters weiner dog kind of bad. I am not allowed in the garage.

i just took the muffler off of my mcculloch 21.2cc blower/vac that is on my bike and i got lots more power out of the engion.

what caused this?

i thought if taking the muffler off of the engion would increse power there must be a different muffler i can put on my engion to increse the power without all the complaints from neighbors.

is there a power increseing muffler that i can put on my motor that will keep noise to a min.?

put answers below

I dont want to write my answer below. Anyway, Ive just welded a big sprocket onto the rear wheel sprocket, and put a little sprocket on the shaft coming out my motor. David, I cant help you anymore, youve got to do something for yourself now. OK! ;)

i have hooked upthe motor. i mounted a bike peg to the drive shaft and used a friction drive system(with no clutch). i still can't hook up the throttle yet. if anyone could answer any of the question below it would help me alot.

1)how would i hook up a cable throttle to the lever system that the engion has on it now?

thanks

Is it possible to put a 31cc weed eater engine on a skate board?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to mount a 31cc weed eater engine on a skate board

-- Glenn (Stan3000@aol.com), June 01, 2003.

i was wondering if a 1.5hp edger engine would be enough horse power to power a bike.

-- Glenn (Stan3000@aol.com), June 01, 2003.

Well... I have built things from go-karts to weed eater powered rc boats and even a 4-wheeler from a honda 110 motor and axle. I'm about to do the same thing as you, the rear drive is always a pain! The motor should be fine, you can go to http://www.northerntool.com and find a drive hub for a go-kart for your rear tire. you might have to modify the width of the rear frame on the scooter to accept the tire and hub width. The setup is about 30.00 and it has a tire, rim, and sprocket all in one set up for a 3/4" axle! Once your hub is mounted, just mount the motor and connect a 11 to 14 tooth sprocket (for a #35 chain)to the clutch bell on the motor. Also at northern tool, a twist throttle(like most motorcycles & 4-wheelers) is only 10.00! This throttle has a 3/4" bore that fits over 99% of handle bars. One other thing...My sons battery powered 4-wheeler died. I used the same hub I talked about here and a 3/4" axle to replace the electric motors and plastic tires in the back. then mounted a weed eater motor in the same manner and it goes about 15mph! I also purchased a brake drum for the rear axle from northern tool and it works great! Under the seat where the battery pack was, I installed a mini-bike gas tank (1.5 gal.). this thing runs forever on a tank of gas! I hope this info help some out there!

-- brian (brianlindley@hotmail.com), June 02, 2003.

Thanks that help alot. I have one of those battery powerd big foot kids car and I did what you said and it works great.

me and a friend are trying to build a go-cart out of this $60 peddle car we found at a toy sore, using a chainsaw engine. first off if we were using a 46cc chainsaw, would that have enough power to push a person that weighs about 180lbs up a small hill.. and what kind of gears would be neccisary in order to make this work...

-- anthony (Mbenz12@aol.com), June 02, 2003.

i am anthonys friend(above), and i was wondering instead of a chainsaw eng. we use a gas blower, and if that could possibly be enough... even enough to just push us forward.. a responce would be appreciated...

-- michael (mcgroom85@hotmail.com), June 03, 2003.

A gas blower might be enough, but I think I would run the chain saw if the weight will be over 50-60 lbs (with driver). The chainsaw clutch might be a little weak, might have to reverse the shoes inside the clutch to grab better. Most centrif. clutches are adjustable this way for a soft or hard lockup. Hope this helps!

hi my names elliot and im going to get my old skooter like i think its like 40 years old im only 14 and im going to get the hub out of an old wimens bike and stick the sprocket from the pedal part on to the hub and stick that on the motor then just leave a normal back wheel or if i can a mountain bike back wheel around 12"-14" will this work and i am also going to see if i can work the motor wile im at skool cus thats where im modifying the big sprocket to fit i also want to stick a new air filter maybe on of the oil breather filters of a car on there and a new exaust probally make it in metal work the motor i am using is a ryobi grass hornet i think it has a clutch in it if it does will the motor stall whne i stop or will it just ingage and just slip the way i think it works is as the speed builds up the bits inside the clutch spin out and grip thanx plz reply

hi, I had thought of the idea of taking one of my old chainsaws and mounting it to an older bike of mine. I just got fdinished reading the whole forum and its made me understand a little better. but one thing, A bicycle chain will not fit the sprocket on the chainsaw? So i cant basically take apart the chainsaw run the bicycle chain to the same sprocket and there we go? If this does not work what is the easiest way possible to achieve this then?

david (key board 100) you need to drill and hole on the part that twist and a bit on the part that doesnt turn about 2-3 cm apart and put a thread in the hole put 2 bolts in and put a spring on the bolts and it should turn back if you think about it its not hard thats an easy way i no it doesnt say exactly how but its ruf idea on how to do it just think and you will figure it out

hello im an australian boy aged 16 me and my mate decided one day to make a motorised scooter so we got a sthil 070 chainsaw motor and a 16 inch scooter and adapted it by using bike chains and sprokets using about a 4.72-1 gear ratio with an 11 tooth sproket on the chainsaw and a 52 on the wheel it works quite well but still needs some minor ajustments but at the moment it still dose 100 kph easy so we r laughing.

hey, im making a scooter using a chainsaw motor but i am having troubles figuring out how to change the gear thing on the chainsaw so it fits a bike chain, if anyone can help it would be appreciated

-- A.J. (guitarist_freako@hotmail.com), June 28, 2003.

I think i have a solution. Taking the clutch off and chopping the sprocket off and welding on a new one. Can anyone tell me how the hell do u take the clutch off?!

-- A.J. (guitarist_freako@hotmail.com), June 29, 2003.

what do you mean by drilling holes in the twist grip throttle

-- David (keyboard100@yahoo.com), June 29, 2003.

I am in the process of building a chainsaw powered BMX using a RYOBI 53cc saw motor. So far I have welded a plate to the bottom bar of the A-section of the frame, after removing the top section. I have the saw facing forward as this will have it rotating in the saw direction as the rear wheel needs to turn. My next step is to remove the clutch and fit sprocket from another back wheel. then cut the cluster from a road bike and mount it on the frame under the saw do that I can then put a second chain from the cluster to a sproket on the crankshaft (which has the pedals removed. I am using the crank sporket from a second crankshaft to then run a third chain back to the rear wheel. Hopefully I will be able to get the right ratio so that it will travel at about 50kph and I will get a motorbike throttle to make controling the revs easier, as the handel bars are the same diameter. Will try to get some pictures together so that anyone who is interested can see what I am doing. Will post the web site that has them as soon as they are available.

howdy howdy all im from australia and the only problem im having is tracking down a rear wheel but i have a 14 tooth sprocket for the motor and a 44 tooth procket for the wheel no i weed to know is it easy to pull a mountain bike wheel apart because thats were the 14 tooth sprocket is and then is it possible to use a wheel barrow or a trolley like the ones used for moving boxes and things the wheels off them as they are pump up and they have 4 bolts in them with i can attach the sprocket to but they are $40 and i dont have that but i have 2 12 inch rims but they are not thick enough to drill holes and bolt on to it could i mig weld the sprocket onto the rim or will it fall apart and can some one answer my quetion please ive answered some one elses

-- e e gill (eli24981@hotmail.com), July 18, 2003.

AJ... About the chainsaw motor not starting, the spark plug foul out really easily and the plug connector gets corroded too. The carbs ae very simple to take apart! Just make sure to blow compressed air through all of the ports. And finally, take off the muffler and use a propane torch to burn out the carbon build-up on the spark arrestor screen inside the muffler!!! This is the most common overlooked problem with chainsaws. Also for the chain tension, you can just use an extra sproket on a lever to adjust the tension like on a Honda ATC 3 wheeler chain! So when the chain streches, just adjust up the slack. Hope this helps!

To Danny: The idea about the electric scooter is a good one. The power wheels 4 wheeler I converted to a gas motor was scrapped! Too much for my kids to do on their own! I just pulled the weed eater motor and put in a chevy 350 starter motor. Then added a 12 volt battery for a lawn tractor. About 20 min. of run time, and the kids dont have to mess with a gas motor. The top speed is about 15mph. All you have to do is take off the front housing off the starter and install a sproket and weld it on. Best of all, at a junk yard, a starter is only about 10.00. This is awsome for kids to keep it running, just show them how to hook up the battery charger and thats it! Feel free to email me with any questions. just got done with building a 4-wheeler from scratch, actually looks like one too! I can send pics if anyone wants to build one, I solved suspension, steering, and other problems that would save you time. Hope this info help some out there. E-Mail: brianlindley@hotmail.com

hey this is joe and im wanting to put this craftsman 46cc chainsaw motor on a go kart. what mods would i have to put in the engine . will that power a gocart? help would be appretiated thanks

ps would a bike or a scotter be a better idea ? please help thanks

-- Joe Vowell (motoxflyhigh77@aol.com), July 20, 2003.

Hey... I wouldn't think it would have enough power for a gokart. A scooter or bike would be alot better. Also, a little secret I'll let go of.... Go to your local metal scrap yard("Tacoma Scrap Metals" or "American Recyclers" where I'm at) and look through their piles of crap!!! People throw away a ton of small motors from weedeaters & chainsaws to push mowers to outboard motors all the time. You can find side shaft 5hp gokart motors with a bad sparkplug or broken pull start, or a chainsaw with a fouled plug or clogged carb! Some are quick and easy fixes, and best of all, it only costs a few bucks for scrap metal cost! My briggs and stratton 5HP on my go-kart was only 2.00. I fixed the pull start cord and it runs great! Its usually rich people who throw away this stuff and go buy a new one when it breaks! Their loss is our gain!!!!! Good luck... Cut, Weld, and RIDE!:)

Hi, I just got an old weed eater and have taken off the shaft. I REALLY need some help on putting it on a 12 inch push scooter. E- mail me ASAP if u can help or have any plans or advice.

-- Taylor (Twist27896@nc.rr.com), July 22, 2003.

If the scooter will accept a 12" kids bike rim, I'd use that. That way you would have a sprocket aleady on the rim. then just weld a small sprocket to the motor shaft and your set! The prev. posts here explain alot. Just look through them and you will find some good tips from people. Hope this helps!

-- brian lindley (brianlindley@hotmail.com), July 22, 2003.

Just had another thought... I saw a gas scooter a while back and remembered it had a slick tire on the back(no tread) and the crankshaft of the motor ran directly on the tire. The motor hinged so the crankshaft would pivot and apply pressure directly onto the tire, no chain or drive belt. The only brake was on the front tire and to start it, you just pushed the scooter a few feet and it started right up. It was a good design, but with out a chutch, the motor would die when you came to a stop, so I guess running a clutch would be a good idea, so the clutch shaft would ride on th etire instead. Here is a web page to check out too(really cool!). http://www.aaroncake.net/projects/scooter.htm

-- brian lindley (brianlindley@hotmail.com), July 23, 2003.

How fast should my weed eater scooter top out at full speed? And if the rear gear is smaller won't that makee the wheel turn faster? Just wondering.

-- Taylor (Twist27896@nc.rr.com), July 25, 2003.

The weedeater motor's speed depends on its size. It should go between 15 and 25mph. You want a smaller sprocket on the motor, and a bigger one on the tire. If you reverse this(smaller on the tire), the motor wont have enough power to start out. Basically, you set it up just like a motorcycle, gokart, OR ATV, for example; a 14-18 tooth on the motor, and a 60 to 80 tooth on the axle. Hope this helps.

i dont know it this is what you want, but, i used a 42cc weed eater engine to build mine. i simply took off the shaft and put on a blade from an industrial exhaust fan. i mounted it on an old parcel carrier over the rear wheel. just dont forget to put a screen around the blade.... it goes like hell

I've got a question. Im planning on welding together a mini-bike frame and attaching a 2hp, 109cc briggs and straton edger engine. I was wondering how fast it would go with an aluminum frame and a 14 tooth sproket on the engine and a 65 on the rear wheel? If you have any other info please tell me more. Thank You

-- matas pacevicius (labey87@yahoo.com), July 29, 2003.

I am going to mount a 32cc chainsaw motor onto a 16" BMX style back and have everything worked out except for the engine sprocket and clutch. Would just remove the old clutch from the motor and then weld a newclutch that has the right size sprocket onto the old on or do I need to take the old one completely off. I was told that the stock clutch on the chainsaw motor would slip and that I should get one made for a mini bike.

Thanks

I was also thinking of building a chainsaw powered bicycle.Could someone please send me some plans including the required Horsepower and torque to RPM ratio. I want to be able to mount the engine over the back tire.Actually, it doesnt have to be a chainsaw engine, but it would be convenient to use on original chainsaw chain, remove the guard and attach a sprocket on the left side.i would also like to know how big the gear will have to be on the back wheel so that it doesnt stall while going up hills. I have a 21 speed mountain bike with wheels about 24 inches. Some other questions are, do chainsaws have some kind of a variable clutch, would i be able to pop start it and how would i stop it from dieing when i want to gun it and try to accel fast. Also would i want a 2 or 4 stroke. I would like to be able to detach the chain and pedal if i were to run out of gas.

Back again...... About the question regarding the electric bike/scooter, a 12vdc starter motor from a car or truck works great. Just find a starter with a 1/2" shaft so a 12 to 14 tooth sprocket will bolt right up. A local electronics store will have a variable voltage switch to control the speed of the motor. As for the power source, a large motorcycle battery is ok, but a riding lawnmower battery is better. It is about half the size of a small car battery and you can purchase them up to 500 cranking amps. This would give you about 30min. of run time. Next post is for bigger motors using a ac/dc conv. Hope this helps!

-- brian (brianlindley@hotmail.com), September 08, 2003.

Continuing from last post.... The other idea I saw here was also a good one! If you would use a ac/dc converter to bring 12vdc to 120vac you could run an AC motor and possibly get more power and run time. A good AC electric motor to use would be one out of an electric garage door opener. The main point is to get a small motor with a ton of torque(horsepower isnt that important in electric motors driving a pesonal craft). You need alot of torque to get it moving. Another option would be a 120vac winch motor. Even a lower RPM motor is ok, you just have to gear it right. You could also use a 120vac starter motor for Tecumseh 10-12hp snowblowers(check out www.ebay.com, might be a few listed). These snowblowers use a 120vac to plug in a snowblower in climates extreemly cold(like Alaska/ Northern Canada). One last thing, a Chevrolet alternator is self contained and could be hooked up to the drive wheel to help recharge some of the power consumption, this might extend your run time between battery charges. Hope this helps some people out there. Feel free to email me if anyone might want some ideas, sometimes I have good ones, sometimes bad ones, just never know!

are you telling me brian that i an actually do tis and it wont really affect performance? would the use of a transformer mean that itll last longer?..

I recently built a bike mounted with a 21 cc chain saw engine. It is extremely ghetto but runs. We used an old mountain bike. We bolted two 20 inch rims 2gether and had a serpentine belt go around 1 rim. We apoxied a pully made of 1 inch oak dowle with some washers on the end to the fly wheel. The bike has slow excelleraion because of its low torgue but can reach 20 mph. Once the pully gets worn down a little and grooved up by the belt it gets more torgue. We also made an air ram for the carborater. We recently found a 5 horsepwer 2 cycle lawn boy lawnmower engine. We are working on makeing another bike. This method is easy and involves no welding or finding exact parts..if u need more info u can im me in my aim name MaFra88

Hey. I am from Australia, and I am thinking of putting together a BMX bike with some sort of petrol motor. I am just wondering though, what sort of engine works the best, and also how to attach. Are there kits for this type of project? Any detailed instructions or pictures would be greatly appreciated. I'll send you some pics when I finish it.............Any reponses can be sent to my email.....Thanks!!!!

I've actually had many people that I cant use a high powered chainsaw motor on a bike.I really just want to ask how you would go about extending the clutch to the handle bar.I'm not planning on peddling my bike so I'm going to saw off the pedals and replace them withstanding bars. I also would like to know how I would mount the engine to the bike and to what part of the bike I should mount it to. ANYONE PLEASE ANSWER ME,I NEED HELP!!!!!

The cable on the weedeater is flexible. I tried putting a skateboard wheel on it but the cable turns while the wheel stands still. How do i attach a gear to the motor since their isn't a shaft just a bending cable. The turning part is in a sleeve and i don't know what to do. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- Taylor (twist27896@nc.rr.com), October 09, 2003.

lawnmower engines are the way to go because of their power and they are a lot more reliable. The only problemo is u cant turn em on their side or all of the oil will drain out of the pistons etc. For this reason i reckomend bolting on a two stroke lawn mower engine instead to eliminate this problem. These are great they have heaps of power and if u set it up properly u will get a nice power band as well. GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN

Hi all hi im an australian so some of the measurments/ weights i couldnt convert so bear with me. I own a fairly old mountain and a fairly old lawn mower and after reading the whole thread (took me friggen ages) i dont whether to use a lawn mower engine or a chainsaw engine, im guessing the lawn mower engine deveolps more power but im not sure. Using the more powerfuller of the two do you reckon i could power a mounatin bike , with me on it total weight of 60 kgs (dont know in pounds :( ) and still travel on my 24" wheels. i dont need help with the technical side of things, just want to know if therre be enough horses for me to move..... and i read the web page Bue flame and almost pissed myself luaghing after hearing the story of the guy being scared to jump of lol then i saw the pictures and luaghed even harder (big fall :P ) but it taught me alot, im almost 6 foot and i cant see myself riding something that small, so i could only manage a mountain bike (and i dont like the idea of putting it on a scooter), so yea, is it possible for me to get moved? ( i think total weight would be somewhere in the 140-150 pound region, on 24 inch diameter wheels)

Thanks heaps, for any help

PS anymore "How To Build" URL's would be greatly appreaciated

Cheers Miles M.

I have a question. I have a 33cc chainsaw and an old mountain bike. what i was thinking, was that i could mount a bike sprocket to the outside of the clutch on the saw, and have a chain run to the left pedal shaft on the bike. That way, i would still be able to use the gears. someone tell me what they think

-- David (webly@HOTMAIL.COM), October 15, 2003.

to the kid that took off the muffler dont do it for to long the engine needs the compression from the exhaust. if it dont have it your engne will not run ever again.

-- Mike ----- (Msgnike@hotmail.com), October 15, 2003.

Hey, im putting a old chainsaw motor on my mountain bike. I had 3 mounting points, i drilled 2 holes through the bike frame and used machine bolts through them into existing holes in the chainsaw. The other place i used a 200 lb. limit plastic tie. Im replacing the centrifugal clutch with another centrifugal clutch that a bike chain fits on. Im not sure if it will be enough power but if not oll just get another rear sprocket for the rear wheel. Im using my brake lever for a throttle. Email me an tell me what u think or give suggestions thanx.

-- Jack T Larkins (Nighthawk685@triad.rr.com), October 16, 2003.

I also am trying to connect a chainsaw engine to a bike(that has no gears) Would it be simple enough to take off the old chain of the bike and put on the chainsaws and put a brake clutch on the power button so when I want to go I squeeze the brake? Would that work easy enough or do I have to take off the old pedels and stuff?

hello ive just built a petrol motorized kids bike.I used a lawmower engine with a horizontal shaft bolted a spindle to the end. Then i mounted a door hing to the bracket mounted that to the frame and had a cable from the engine to a brake lever off of a normal push bike. Then u pull the lever wich pulls the engine down wich hits the wheel and then bumps to start it roughly goes 10-15mph.Its grate fun going up and down the road

i need ur help guys. i have a 2hp weed eater and first i dont know how to take it apart properly. second i want a friction dirve. and thrid i need help in mounting the engine without any welding. finally if possible do u guys have any idea on a throttle. any help, plans etc would be great and pleas post it up on the site. i am very greatful for you guys thanks again

-- kurt nazry (smistry25@aol.com), November 17, 2003.

yes a 2h weed eater motor will be fine,to take the engine apart u will need to undo the head bolts pull the head off. And then watch it because when u put them bck on youv'e squash the rings together im only 14 years old and i have taken my engine apart and rebuilt them. Next the throttle just connct it to a brake lever off a push bike. And finally mount the engine make a bracket out of still plate or alliminium cut out to shape and bolt it together. Ihave made a push bike with an enine on and it goes alright.

the optimum engine would be a STIHL 4-MIX ENGINE. It is a four- stroke engine that runs on a gas/oil mixture. It has valves like a four stroke, put part of the gas/oil mixture is diverted to pass through the crankcase, so there is no need for an oil reservoir. The end result is a four-stroke engine that can be turned on its sides without destroying it. An article on it was in the last issue of Popular science and more information can be obtained at www.stihl.com

I had the Idea of using a skateboard or other type of vehicle on the sand by putting treads on the back, and wheels or a ski in the front for steering, so that I could manuver in the sand. I was wondering how a chainsaw engine would do, because the chainsaw engine is already made to turn the chain or blade of the chain saw, so wouldn't treads work kinda the same way. Also I was wondering about stopping and slowing the board down. If any one can offer some helpful tips of things to be weary of let me know, thx.

Its simple to make a motor bike. I have a Craftsman 25cc weed eater engine im going to use. You can go to a metal shop or order online a piece of iron or steel or aluminum. Im going to get iron because its cheap. It should be about 1 inch wide and 2 or 3 inches long. Drill a hole in the center the same size as the rod coming off the flywheel, then you will have to pull out a saw and make notches running down the outside of the spindle so it will grip to the tire, its going to be a friction drive (the spindle rides on the tire). You will have to weld the the spindle to the rod on the flywheel. Then you just have to mount the engine to the bike and put springs on it to keep tention on the engine to tire. When you go a few mph the engine will kick on and when you stop it stalls. Thats how a lot of gopeds work. Then if you want you can fix up the engine by getting a walbro Wt-334 carb, lightening the flywheel, lot of stuff. Hope this helps.

-- Brandon Heltzel (Brano1025@aol.com), April 22, 2004.

I ran into this web site by accident and I have just one thing to say. If you can not figure out how to build a simple motorized scooter by yourself, then how on earth do you think any of you are going to be able to take other peoples ideas and do it? It is cake, you just make it work, use what you can, its like easier than than writing your name! Oh by the way Keyboard 100, you have spent way too long figuring this out, if you are not smart enough to put it together in a few hours, move on to something a little easier like legos. Bye all, dont strain your little minds to much, and remember, if you get too confused by any of it, stop, and make sure you did not go stupid by saying the abc's to yourself queitly!

I've got a 36cc saw engine mounted to the front forks of a Mountain bike, it's chain driven, these projects take a lot of work... and re work,

-- Dwayne (D.Dollmaier@shaw.ca), May 09, 2004.

I got a mail from one "a a ", I do have some troubleshooting knowledge for you, I failed to get your mail address. I will say this thou, my bike is all about fun, its not reliable......., I usually break it every 3 to 4 rides. I've thrown my chain twice, I am also still trying new cogs/toothed spockets all the time, I figure the bike goes about 30 to 35 mph, fun stuff out on the trils, i'm sure the rough terrain has a lot to do with the chain problem. Good luck to all with your projects..........

-- Dwayne (D.Dollmaier@shaw.ca), May 18, 2004.

hey i have a push scooter with sixten insh wheels and a 35cc kawasaki brushcutter engine and i am making a scooter. i was wondering if you could give me some tips on what gear ratio i should use and how much the sprockets are. peice out.

-- william wall (villan_xc@hotmail.com), May 19, 2004.

hey all you people i think motorised scooters suck. why dont if you want one just buy one why ake your own. why dont you start playing footy or something.

-- not telling (mooey06@hotmail.com), May 19, 2004.

guck off

-- Mugu Ghana (mugu@magas.mag), May 26, 2004.

So, I'm in the process of designing a second mountain bike this time i'm going to mount the engine over the rear wheel. I'm going to use an older model Stihl 460 saw, i've got a predicament thou, I'd perfer to leave the casing intact so I figure a bracket system, any ideas?, they would be appreciated, thanks..

-- Dwayne (D.Dollmaier@shaw.ca), May 31, 2004.

I made a "weed-eater" bike way back in 1999 before this thread started and it was fun to read how many people have solved this their own way. I think the "best" is whatever you have time and resources to complete. I wish that I had more time to get my bike modded even more. I'm in the process of adding a rear disc brake and longer rear triangle to eliminate the wheelie factor. (the seat on 18" seat post is right over the rear wheel)

My bike has 3 speeds with gripshift shifters, 23 or 27cc weed eater modded, clutch, and 12" wheels. It's capable of 20 mph on the flat and can climb modest hills slowly in first gear. It's not a real powerhorse, but 20 mph on a 2'-2.5' wheel base feels like your rippin'!

I first started with a direct drive system from a 9 tooth sprocket that was machined narrower to fit standard bicycle chain through a clutch to a rear sprocket almost as large as the rim (tire taller). This proved to not work with the clutch slipping all the time and no real RPM's allowable. After doing some math, I figured out that the bike had to go 50 mph for any decent RPM with the gear ratios I had. Not gonna happen with only 23 cc's driving it. I solved the problem by adding a jack shaft where the bottom bracket mounts (no more pedals) through industrial sealed ball bearings. I simply added extender pegs to the front tire and comfortably rest my feet there. I think I used two of those machined nine tooth sprockets, one on the motor (clutch)that went to some 30-something toothed sprocket, and one on the second chain that drove the big sprocket on the rear wheel. I installed the rear sprocket to a 3 speed internal shifting hub with grip shift on handlebar to control the gear. I added a $5 twist grip throttle.

Here's the best part.... motor-free, bike $5, levers, $5, sprocket parts $5 or so, plus lots of old junk laying around, tires and tubes $25. Time----don't ask it was months before this thing hit the road.

Thanks for keeping this sight going for over 3 years, keep the rubber side down and be safe, I once lunched myself over the bars when my cable actuated rear wheel pedal type brake in the front wheel locked up at 15 mph. Don't use rear pedal brakes in the front wheel, bad idea. I now have some cheap caliper brake that does the job okay, but I'd like to add the disc my friend gave me to the rear wheel.

I am making a motor bike now. I have about a 25cc or 30cc engine that I just took off and put a rotary carb, ported the intake and exhaust out a little and other stuff. I'll tell you guys how its coming along soon.

Dang, sorry about the double post.

-- Brandon Heltzel (Brano1025@aol.com), June 06, 2004.

Ooh!

WHO EVER WROTE THIS YOU SHOULD STICK A CROW BAR IN YOUR ASS AND SHOOT YOUR SELF BECAUSE YOUR A STUPID FUCK FOR THINKING YOU CAN CHANGE A CHAIN SAW CHAIN WITH A BIKE CHAIN THEY ARE TWO TOTALY DIFFERNT CHAINS DUMBASS YOU SHOULD BE SHOT AND PISSED ON MOTHER FUCKER

-- ass man (assFucker90@hotmail.com), June 11, 2004.

hi i am a fourteen yaer old kid who builds things in my free time (duh) I am currently working on how to put a chainsaw engine on a bicycle and have a good idea... i made calculations about the gear ratio and engine power needed to get the proper aceleration and top speed on a 26 speed mountain bike here are some figures: with a mcculoch 2.0 C.I. chainsaw engine (wich has a clutch that can be modified to take a bicycle chain) and a wheel diameter of 26" the bike weighs about 40 pounds plus me a 105 pound rider and a gear ratio of about 26:1 an engine max RPM of about 13800 @about 2 HP a total efficiency of about 80% taking into account bearing drag tire friction and chain friction and even some wind friction and a top speed of about 40 MPH you can accelerate at a speed of roughly 12.5 meters per second^2. i hope this helps. :)

-- Gollum (squishee@aol.com), June 17, 2004.

P.S.

the Acceleration rate is roughly the same as that of a minivan with a v-6 Engine, if you take the muffler off a chainsaw engine it decreases back pressure and will actually improve the performance greatly because of how a 2-stroke engine works it'll probably add about 1/4 HP extra and it'll probably increase RPM i'll try it and tell you how it goes.

HI MY NAME IS JONESY. I AM BUILDING A MOTORISED SCOOTER. I KNOW THIS QUESTION ISNT ON THE SITE BUT I WAS WONDERING WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO ATTATCH A 96 TOOTH SPROCKET ONTO A 16 INCH WHEEL. ONTO A PLASTIC RIM OR ONTO A SPOKED RIM. COULD SOMOONE PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS QUESTION. PEACE OUT

-- JONESY (villan_xc@hotmail.com), June 19, 2004.

I was wondering how to make a weedeater powered bike or moped weedeater bike . If any one knows how to connect the weedeater some how to the rear sprocket of a 18 speed mountain bike. please tell me how or email me plans or how to's. Also how to mount the engine on the bicycle. Will be nice to know. THANKS

-- Brandon A. (Brandon747@netscape.net), June 21, 2004.

you can't use a weedeater the clutch isn't strong enough you'll burn it up in a few minutes if you get it to work at all. what you need is at least a 36 cc chainsaw without the bar or cutting chain you need to weld a sprocket onto the clutch bell and connect that to a jack shaft with a sprocket that is about 15" in diameter and connect that to the rear wheel sprocket via bicycle chain chain and the deraileure needs to be rotated around so you can shift gears you'll also need to add a cable and a thumb-throttle to the the engine and bike chainsaw clutches are much stronger than weedeater clutches. to mount it on the bike you need some piping a hammer some bolts a hack saw a drill and enginuity. hope this helps.

-- Gollum (squishee@aol.com), June 21, 2004.

PLEASE,PLEASE PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY TELL AZZA WHAT SPROCKETS WOULD SUIT A 33 CC CHAINSAW MOTOR.I AM GOING TO ATTEMP TO ATTACH TO A SCOOTER.....PLEASE..IAM BRAIN DEAD ON THIS SUBJECT...

-- azza (aaronh@ncable.net.au), June 25, 2004.

Well take it apart and look at it. They dont sell any sprockets to turn a chainsaw into a motorbike. If your gona make one your going to have to see how things work and try building it yourself. I would just take the bellhousing off the clutch and chop the sprocket off for the chainsaw chain and weld a sprocket that will fit a bike chain of something.

what does friction powered mean i think is when u atatch a wheel to a motor spindle and make that wheel lean onto the main scooter wheel or bike wheel plz answer this question as i am currently making a whipper snipper powered scooter because me (14) and my freind kahlil (14) put a weedeater wpr snpr motor onto a normal steet scooter (friction powered) and we were beating cars on a 50 km(speed limit) road so it was going like 55 to 70 km. man it was the best fun ever and it was so funny seeing this little scooter going that fast lol

information in how to put a pipe into a 36cc Gas Scooter ....how and where in the motor would i put it at

-- Leonel Frias (Fuegp300@hotmail.com), August 14, 2004.

ok ok ok i am gonna let you all in on a few points... my dad is an engineer, he has all the best methods for this kind of stuff and this kind of stuff is what i do!

1. first of all, DONT THINK OF FRICTION DRIVE!!! no ppl really it sux beyond the reaches of the land suck! you lose power and no one wannt to do that!

2. if your using a petrol motor generally the best gearing (to preserve engine life) is about 1-5 (for thats example 10 teeth on the drive sprocket on the motor and 50 teeth on the sprocket on the wheel). To make a fast scooter with average take off use about the gearing 1-5 but if wheel size allows i personally use about 1-7, 1-8, 1-10 even (this ensure very fast take off but slow top speed). Idealy you want some where in between... that takes some trial and error)

3. use chain or belt drive cant stress that enough i prefer chain drive coz there is nothing worse than a snapped belt!

4. i use a calculation to determine about how fast the scooter is gonna go before i build it and see whether its worthi my time, needs different parts or what ever (i am australian and all my measurments are metric in millimeters (mm))

to perform the calculation you must know the following... -speed of motor (revs) i belive a standard brush cutter does about 8000 revs -teeth on the drive sproket -teeth on the wheel sprocket -diameter of the wheel in mm

all you do is type into a regular calculater as follows

(engines revs)x(teeth on drive sprocket)/(teeth on wheel sprocket) x (wheel diameter in mm)/1000x60/1000= speed in km/h

i understand metric probably doesnt help much but surly u can convert these mesurements!

also that calculation doesnt give the speed you would have with a load (such as your self) so you would go slightly slower than your answer depending on your weight plus the scooters weight.

5. USE CHAIN GUARDS!!!!!!!!! PEOPLE DONT LIKE MISSING FEET/TOES!!!!

6. motors generally work best if positioned above the wheel

7. mountain bikes suck with brush cutter and chain saw motors, their wheel are way to big and the little motors have trouble hauling them along!

8. make sure the wheel sprocket is slightly shorter diameter than the of the wheel

any way thats my rant and informative turn,

happy scooterin!

i am going to make a motorized skateboard with a 21cc weedeater motor

-- asdr (ryan@aol.com), October 05, 2004.

Hey Guys I'm an Aussie aswell and really interested in taking a weed eater engine and fixing it to a scooter. couple of things - What kind of scoter to use (or how to make my own) - any sketches of engine mounting would be good and how to max out the power with the 2 stoke I've got

hope someone can help!

-- Tim Jensen (dragflickfanatic@gmail.com), October 15, 2004.

Yeah and another thing or mabey two things

is it worth making the scooter with a 18cc engine and where can i get pics from to help me get started

hope one of all you smart people can help me out!

Remember pics pics pics PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAS

-- Tim Jensen (dragflickfanatic@gmail.com), October 15, 2004.

sorry tim no pics, but a fact is its not really worth puttin an 18cc motor on anything but the weed eater or pathetic chain saw it was when it was new, the point is they suck, something worth while has to be about 25cc+ or its not worth the time or effort to make it work.

also a 22cc skateboard would be an interesting example of suck. i spose u could keep the orignial wheels if u put a hinge and a plate on the rear kick of the skate board attached to the motor with a small push bike wheel on the motor but i wouldnt bother... it would be to damn hard to start the thing because you would have to turn the weight of the wheel when pull starting it and that would destroy the zip start function, wrecking your engine (unless u want to replace or substitute it ;)) the only way to do it that way would be to have a clutch system but i dont know a weed eater or a chainsaw that has a clutch that could take that kind of punshment

-- Beaux (Screwya@notgettinmyemail.com), October 16, 2004.

can somebody less sceptical please answer my questions

-- tim (dragflickfanatic@gmail.com), October 17, 2004.

Hey sorry dude, dont listen to my brother, thanx for the advice I'll get a bigger engine. 18cc just lying around the house still apreciate any pics and stuff!

-- Tim Jensen (dragflickfanatic@hotmail.com), October 18, 2004.

my dad recently bought me a 33cc ryobi weed hornet whippa snippa engine to put on a dirt scooter it will be hard to mount it but my dad hs an idea (itll take to long to explain.any way when we bought the engine it had a minor fuel leak the pull cord was also very hard to pull we took the mot a part and found that there was melted plastic in the centrifugal clutch and the the shaft had palsic on it we filed the plastic off and this weekend we are going to mount to a scooter with achain drive. but will the clutch handle this much pressure?

-- jamie whalley (krak123@hotmail.com), October 20, 2004.

Hey all, im a 16 year old aussie and have been very interested in making petrol scooters for about 4 years now. I have already built 3 of them, they all worked great but my personal favorit was my last. SO LISTEN UP THIS IS A GREAT TIP THAT NO ONE HAS POSTED YET! as weed wackers have a very weak clutch u cannot run a sprocket straight on to them or the sideways pressure will ruin ur cluch within a few hours. So i came up with the idea of usin a simple, GRINDER HEAD! all you do is detach the grinder head from the grinder and you can run you flywheel directly towards your wheel thus no pressure on the clutch! my cluch has been used foe a year or so now and is still in AS NEW CONDITION! the grinder head also is geared down so you dnt have to worry about putting a huge back sprocket on and a really small front one on! Anyone who wants a rough drawn up diagram of what im talking about just email me and ill send you one!

CHEERS ALL! Cachya

Hey! can any1 help me.... im trying to build a go-cart like car and wanted to know if i put dual 5 hp engines on it if it would work if a 90 lb kid tryed to use it... any awnsers would be helpful....email me them or put them on the site... if u email me put subject as "site"

-- Wade Hunt (lildude983902002@yahoo.com), December 07, 2004.

Wade.....If you mount two 5hp motors on a cart you could pull a car with that? Easy big boy! I build motor driven scooters myself. I have a direct drive 50?cc husqvarna chainsaw engine scoot I just finished building. This is my third custom build among many that I have purchased. the new runs at the appx. speed of 45mph. not to mention it carries my 250+ weight! I've been doing this for about two years and never see any custom scoots. I happen to be web watch'in when I came across this site. Good seeing some innovative alike minds out there. I addition I found a site that may help many of you out there.Cause the same question keeps coming up "how/where do I start?" "can I get some plans to start?" well GO TO http://www.motorizedscooter.cjb.net/ . I know that this may be one of you guys that own this web site? but I'm not stealing it just referring it to the ones interested!! plus there is no name to it that I noticed. you can ask for pics and I can respond

thx alot.... i didnt know how much power it would need.... can u send me some pics?it would be really appreciated

-- Wade Hunt (lildude98390202002@yahoo.com), December 10, 2004.

hey, im looking to make a gas powered scooter. my car gets terrible gas milage and i just want something that can get me the 15 blocks to school. I have thought of using a razor scooter and either a weed eater motor or a chain saw. I have leaned towards the chainsaw because it has a clutch. I weigh about 150 and i know how to calculate the gear ratios needed but i was just wondering how to get the power from the chain to the wheel seeing how it is just a little ruber wheel with no axel. thanks guys, and if you have any pics or plans it would be awsome if you could send them to me.

-- artimus (arthur.padget@cfu.net), December 28, 2004.

artimus...

scooter wheels do have axles... just that they arnt long enough to mount anything onto the clearance between the wheel and framework is much to small to fit any type of sprocket worth your time...

get over it and 1. buy a scooter or 2. build 1, dont turn a razor into 1, they are aluminium and are bastards to weld and such unless u have an aluminium welder... or 3.Ditch ya crud box car and walk... its not that far...

have fun

-- Beaux (screwya@notgettinmyemail.com), December 30, 2004.

Hi...can anyone tell me how fast a two stroke blower/chain saw motor spins? For gear ratio purposes.

Thanks....Dennis

Hi there i have a ryobe lawnhornet , every1 tells me its a popular motor, i got the motor i got the bike to put it on,How do i mount it over the back wheel?Someone suggested that i put a packrack over the back wheel, but i dunno.Im direct driving it with a stunt peg rubbing on the back wheel.Even though motorized bikes are illegal, im hoping to ride this to school one day.Any emails appreciated. Thanks

This site rocks :D
