As a card-carrying member of the Four Stroke Singles National Owners club (no, really) I have to ask: In last night's episode on high mileage gas vehicles, they did an animated sequence to show the difference between two stroke engines and four stroke engines. Except there was no difference in what they showed. They had both engines firing every time the piston neared top dead center (as a two stroke would) What happened to the intake and exhaust strokes? Did any one else see this?

Try this website. They describe how a two stroke and a four stroke engine work. There is a link that takes you to the four stroke. I don't think that they did it wrong, I just think that Cathy didn't explain it very well.

I saw the same thing Chip, the intake and the exhaust valves both opened and closed in 2 cycles.

I also watched the firing sequence and although the two cycle operated at a faster RPM the four cycle fired each time.

This may not be typical of ALL four stroke engins but, my SR500 w/ electronic ingnition fires on both strokes, the motor isn't smart enough to know the difference and it doesn't matter really now does it. On the other hand when you put one back together like we all eventually do, we can't possibly get it out of time.
