Killing dog gone, hopefully

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We THINK someone got that dog that killed my goats. I saw it at the end of my driveway, but it was too far away for me to get a good shot. It was limping and practically crawling along the ground. That morning, we had heard it yelling like it was caged up, so thought someone had luck with the live trap. I saw it crawl into the sand plum briars, but since it was dark, I was not going to follow it. I could see a trail where it had gone, but no dog...could be that a coyote finished it off..the neighbors across the street said they saw a coyotes type dog run in there, not a common if ever thing around here!! No sign since of either, and that was 4 days ago. I am still nervous about letting the children out by themselves, since something is still spooking the horses across the street, but the children are learning dog and other wild animal awareness, which is good for them anyway.

I hope you're right that it is gone and this mess is over. I don't know if I understood if this was a stray animal that did this to your goats or was it a neighbor's? None the less, I say good riddance! I hope more positive things come your way from here on out.

Cindy,

Hope the dog is gone for good. You might consider getting a whistle for each child to have while outside. You can find very loud storm whistles in camping dept at Walmart.

A whistle is a very good idea!! As far as we know, this was someone's pet. The dog was seen in a persons yard, dog house and all, but they said that they just had all that set up for "that stray dog that keeps coming around". It has been seen by other neighbors in that same yard for a year and a half now. I can't do anything about making them take responsibility for a dog they say isn't theirs. sigh

Cindy, it saddens me to hear that you have a hardened heart towards this killing dog. I also feel for the goats, but this dog is killing due to a HUMAN failing to socialize this animal properly. Dont you have an animal control officer or humane society nearby? IF so please notify them to look for this dog, or if you see it again. Hopefully this dog does not have rabies, I understand your fear. However this dog was originally bred by HUMAN BEINGS as a pet or companion. Somewhere along the line, the human not the dog screwed up and this dog is now killing goats and becoming a menace. Human beings took wild animals out of their environment and domesticated them for their own uses. Now it is our turn to take responsibility for the mess. This poor soul deserves a humane death...there IS something you can do if this dog belongs to someone... call animal control or your local humane society. Please have more compassion. We are ALLresponsible.

I DID call the pound, the humane society, game warden, police, they all said the same thing. I have to kill the dog myself. I told them that the dog threatened to attack two of my children while they were on the front steps to the house, they said "shoot the dog". I told them we know who the dog belongs to, I was told that I couldn't prove the dog belonged to them because the people say the dog doesn't, even though it repeatedly goes back to their house. My heart isn't hardened toward this dog, I have no choice but to hope it is dead. It is either that or wait until it kills one of my children before anyone is authority will take action. Those are my only choices. The dog continues to come back, barking and snarling at my house. It doesn't seem to like fences so my little goat is safe, but it won't stay away and the authorities don't care.

Hey, kind of a screwed question. Have you guys ever been in a situation where you have a dog next door.... and he's still barking come 3am 4am 5....am. It's painfull to go through. My dog now is responding to this barking w/ him.

I came accross this doing a search on "killing a dog".... :) This is what saturdays are for.
