Playing Video-CD's on PlayStation with Demo One

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi,

I have heard that you can play Video-CD's on your PlayStation with the V-CD player on Demo One. I borrowed this Demo One CD from a friend, but there was a huge crack and lots of scratches in it and it didn't work. Has anyone ever succesfully played a Video-CD on a PlayStation by using only software?

I have a good cd of Demo One, but I dont know how this work, can you explain it to me? What type of converting must the vcd's have?

-- ikke (cybereagle7@hotmail.com), April 12, 2001.

I think you could play an official video CD, but i have never tried it myself. Could you please try to play a CD of the type you can rent in the videostore. There must be a logo COMPACT DISC DIGITAL VIDEO on it. There are three directories on Video-CD's: CDI, MPEGAV and VCD. CDI is for Philips CD-I MPEGAV is for PC VCD is for Video-CD players (e.g. from Sony) You can also mail me directly (mag in het Nederlands).

Since the last message i have learnt that the V-CD option on Demo One is not an actual Video-CD player. It is a program that makes visual effects when playing an audio CD. I still think there must be somekind of boot-CD out there. Please keep us informed about the search for the Holy Grail.

u can play vcd's on a playstation u need the addon that clips onto the back

-- adam smith (underthebridge@hotmail.com), April 21, 2001.

I have the movie card addon that clips in the back of the playstation, and its great. Anyone interested can get it from: http://www.playstationmods.com/cart_vcd.htm

It plays VCDs (official or otherwise), and it also allows you to play imports/backups, and use the cheat manager. To play VCD you need to boot from an official playstation game first.

How do you play movies without a vcd card or an accessory. Whoever tell me I will give you access to a place where you can download psx iso's. If I tell you, don't tell anyone.

-- unknown boy (coolboy808@hotmail.com), June 28, 2001.

there's no way you can play v.c.d,s on a psx with out an GAMARS card uless you make some mod,s to the v.c.d well it will not be a v.c.d affter it has been modified more like a psx game. the mpeg/dat has to be converted in to an str im not sure how to do this but if you do find out let me know and i will tell you how to do the rest. :) bye bye

u can convert the orignal VCD's, ram's, movs', etc anything thats media into a STR file. An str file is the video media format used by playstaion, but the question is, how do u boot it!?

-- NTN (nathan_x45@hotmail.com), February 10, 2002.

Ok. Let's settle this once and for all. I just recently saw a "PSONE" not a "PSX" play a VCD without the mod chip. It is possible. Since then a few days ago I went out and bought a PSONE. My friend has a CD that will boot the vcd. He uses the GameShark and uses the CD explorer to act as a movie player. The problem is, he will not tell me how to make the movies so that it plays. I've wasted over a dozen CD's trying to find the right frame rate, window size, and channels and other good stuff. But IT IS possible. Format of the movie is the main key to playing it on "PSONE". For those of you who keep babbling on about the VCD mod chip, no one cares and we all know about it, it's just playing a vcd "Without a vcd mod chip".

-- CKS (hgu55@aol.com), January 18, 2003.

there is a way i know it and here it is "no mod chip way" step 1. get a file converter that can change your movie into any format. i used windows media player 9 series with a plugin i got lucky i forgot the url. step 2. use windows movie maker 2 and change the file attributes to fit wide screen format and when youplay the video on your computer it should look way distorted. 320 x 540 pixels step 3. burn the .str movie to a disk step 4. boot the psone or psx with a game shark disk and use the explorer to find the option to watch str movies step 5. place the disk in you burned and enjoy or use an emulator you find on line and do this method use the emulator to "make a ps game" using the movie file then burn it hold the tab down with metal or card board to keep the disk spinning with the cover off then take an old game and as soon as you get the colorful P after the sony logo pull the disk out and place that one in and voila movies i do it all the time both ways

Buy yourself a cheap Standalone DVD player, it will play your VCDs. :P

http://divx-digest.com/software/sony_tools.html

It converts AVI/DivX movies to Sony Playstation movies (STR).

-- Chronos (gsd581@mail.usask.ca), December 29, 2003.

STR files can be played on PlayStation even without Gameshark. You just need to make an iso with a program called PSX cd builder. The problem is, it's very hard to find it these days. It's VERY rare.

-- Mad Fox (emumaniac@msn.com), January 08, 2004.

i have a copy of PSX CD Builder.. except everytime i go to create the Image File.. it sez run time error.. it pisses me off.. its the only version of the program i can find.. it is possible to watch a movie on Playstation.. just take practically anymovie.. convert it to an uncompressed .AVI.. then covert that to .STR.. burn it to cd.. right now my problem is finding a Boot CD that has a file explorer/str movie viewer on it.. once i get that.. im done :)

-- MirageOne (mirageps@hotmail.com), January 18, 2004.

I found a .rar showing you how to make it and it includes tools. Only thing is it is 5fps which is really slow... I am trying to make one but I am running into errors. I will try to keep you posted but it doesnt look that well.

-- David Cilc (cilc@gymvp.cz), January 22, 2004.

Playing vcd's on psx is easy to do without any lame vcd cards and such

i made a tutorial including "rare" tools like psx cd builder and pimp

after making the str i prefer to burn with pimp because it lets u fit

70 minute movies into 1 psx cd but psx cd builder is better for n00bs

feel free to contact me if u want my tutorial

-- manboy (JUNIOR6886@comcast.net), January 23, 2004.

Hey listen, i have read this entire thing, and all i can say is that yes you can convert .avi to .str, i have done it and i know exactly how to do everything like that with 100% Success. But my problem here was that i need a way of booting it, PSX CD builder is not compatable with windows XP, however i might be able to get a copy of linux to try it on, i also have a movie player called P.I.M.P i downloaded it a while ago from www.ceddy.cjb.net , however this site does not work anymore, anyways i have tested all of my converted movie files and i know exactly how to do it and i can help you if you can help me, i need a way to boot it? Can anyone help? Please email me DevilRocks15@yahoo.com Thanx :)

-- OlEG (amfm@mail.ru), May 08, 2004.

here is the deal, manboy just offered a tutorial on converting to STR and booting it. BUT, there is the catch, the CD-R will only hold 36Min of movie time and you lose quality. You can fit a 72min movie on a cd-r but the problem is, it plays like chipmunks, the words play too fast u wont hear them. AND, it is really a big waste of time to cut the movie in 36min STR and still lose quality, i did this for two movies and i got tired of it. So, go ahead and email manboy for his tutorial if you still want to do all of this.

Okay, heres my prob. I got the avi2str thing, uncompressed the video, yaddayaddayadda. But then when i go to convert, i keep getting the "unknown error" message. I've tried like 5 diffrenet ersions of virtualDUB, like a billion different video's, redownloaded the avi2str thing like 3 times, and even tried all te cpompatibility options (i got xp home), but still, unknown error. some videos will convert, but only the first few thousand frames. I got the gameshark which i happen to use as my modchip, cheating device, and str player all in one, but i cant get the stupid program to work. Anyone else got any advice or have fixed this prob? Oh ya, for those who want my iso of my gameshark, buy it on ebay folks cuz i aint sendin it. And for those of you who keep sayin give up on the project, go bother someone else, i hate when people come into boards and just post crap that doesn't help anyone and for the most part is just not true. anyway, for those of you still loyal to this, keep up the good work and if u find out how to fix the prob, send me mail, k. C-ya

-- computRjunkE05 (Douglas684@yahoo.com), June 14, 2004.

you have to convert the movie to "old version avi". i've made it with virtualDub mod.
