In the building of all of the machines and contraptions you have missed a realitive easy machine to think up ( but build?) How about a motorized mechanical or hydrolic contraption that would do something really simple. Dig a hole. Possibitities are endless.

Like a backhoe or a one of those machines that drills for water. hmm. Would need to hammer through bedrock. Might hit some magma. How would the camaras get down there to show us the progress?

how 'bout instead of digging yourself into a hole, how about getting yourself out of a hole. A crane would lower your team and your machine into the hole, and you've gotta get out.

Now there's a much-needed device! Any fool can dig himself into a hole. (I do constantly, just ask my wife.) It takes a special sort to be able to get back out again!
