price of milk in your area

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am curious to know how prices vary on milk across the country. Here, food prices overall are higher. A gallon of milk is $3.09 to $3.39. However, while visiting my folks in central TX over spring break, I noticed a gallon of milk there was $1.79 (these are everyday prices, not sale prices)....which got me to thinking... What do you pay for a gallon of milk if you have to buy it at the store?

We're paying $1.99 per gallon for 2% milk here in Upstate NY. I hope to have goat milk--maybe Fiona the Naughty Nubian will listen to me for a change and kid soon. I'd like to get an older Jersey cow but dear hubby is not keen on the idea, I've barely talked him into a beef steer. Oh, well, I'll work on him some more.

My husband just picked up a gallon of 2% milk for $1.99 at one of our smaller stores in town. We can get milk cheaper at a small store than at the larger ones. Were in central Wash. state. Lot's of clouds and a cold wind, but the sun is shining. It's a good day to play on the computer. Love this forum and love to look up farming sites.

here in south central VA we pay at the local Food Lion 3.75 for a gallon of reg milk. i hardly buy milk anymore as we are blessed with goats who provide a good supply. But the milk prices are awful and And think about this: just how much of that do you think the poor farmer gets? Not much. In fact farmers here in VA get $12.00 per hundred for milk (cow). Its the middle man who is driving the prices up and up.

Hey, Connie, Where in NM are you? We're in Albuquerque for now, but will be heading for the middle of know-where NM (Near Lordsburg) in the near future. Any way... If you're near Albuquerque you should consider Cost-Co or Sam's Club, there mil runs in the $1.85 gallon range. and at Cost-Co (and soon at Sam's) they sell gas at .05 to .10 below the street. So we find our milk and gas alone more than pays for the membership fee. You still have to mind your P's&Q's, as all that glitters is not a great deal at the "Hundred Dollar Club" (nick name for the warehouse shopping places 'cause you somehow always end up spending $100.00).

In Connecticut - $3.49 for "store brand" and 20cents or so higher for name brands (like Hood), although the name brand is $2.85 in the local 7-11 convenience store.

-- Christina (introibo2000@yahoo.com), April 07, 2001.

Wily, I'm way down in the SE corner in Hobbs. Winds here yesterday were 60 mph, but we hadn't had much wind before this. No Sam's,etc. here-- have to go to TX (Lubbock or Midland for that). Too far to pick up a gallon of milk when you need it!! Hope your move goes well.

Store brands 2% is $2.69 gallon, not on sale. Name brand Prairie Farms (bottled here in Olney) is quite a bit more.

NE South Dakota - price of store brand milk is $2.89 per gallon but sometimes stores run sales for $1.89. WE don't drink much mild (I am lactose intolerant) so I just buy half gallons for about $1.69.

-- JoAnn (jonehls@excite.com), April 08, 2001.

We don't buy much milk here either. I bought a gallon for my dad last night - $2.39 but I noticed this morning it was $1.85 at Braums (our local dairy store). I buy 1/2 gallon every 2 weeks. I don't get along with casien very well.

Here at our local SuperWalmart about $1.59/gal. Go 20 miles to Lexington to a SuperWalmart and it jumps to $2.99/gal.

We pay $2.99-3.29/gal for skim here in S.E. KS.

-- Marty (Mrs.Puck@Excite.com), April 08, 2001.

Here in N. Idaho, I just went to town today and purchased milk for $3.49 a gallon. I go shopping once every two weeks and have noticed that the price has gone up by $0.10 increments the past four times. I have wondered why this is happening to.

-- Lisa (tepeeclan@nidlink.com), April 08, 2001.

2% here is going for $2.69 a gallon, but it seems to be on sale alot for $2.00 a gal. We just picked up three gaalons yesterday for $1.99. I try to get it on sale and when it's not we drink Morning Moos, it only cost $1.19 a gallon. My husband isn't all that fond of Morning Moos, the kids and I think it's wonderful. My husband really wants his own dairy cow, he loves the rich cream and whole milk. We don't have a place YET for a cow, someday, soon I pray.

-- Kelle in MT. (kvent1729@aol.com), April 09, 2001.

FREE...that's right folks they are giving away a gallon of 2% milk.... of course that's only after you buy one for $3.29 a gallon. One in the frig and one in the freezer.

-- jz (oz49us@yahoo.com), April 09, 2001.

We pay $3.19 for whole milk and $2.89 for 2%...

-- Sue Diederich (willow666@rocketmail.com), April 09, 2001.

$2.49 for 2% regular price in Lafayette, LA- and I'm looking for a goat! : )

-- Kristin, now in LA. (positivekharma@aol.com), April 09, 2001.

The cows milk runs between $2.69-$3.69 for 2% or whole, but I have cow milk allergies so tried buying some goats milk from a neighbor, $5.00 a gallon! I know, she hand milks them, then takes the cream *sob*,etc. so there is more work involved.. so I don't buy it very often. I can't wait until we get the new goats and they are up and milking!! My children and I will go through a gallon of goat milk a day when we had it.

Here in northern Iowa a gallon of skim milk is $2.07.

-- Anna Jones (countryanna54@hotmail.com), April 14, 2001.

Paid $2.55 a gal for grade a vit. fortified at Costco in Richmond VA.

-- Bruce Burdge (comfreybruce@richmond.com), July 06, 2001.

Our's is also $3.19 and the store actually has an apology sign up, they are blaming the price on the floods, locally goats milk is $5 per gallon. We are very lucky with gas in that we have a price war going on, we are paying $1.08!!! Yeah! Just goes to show you the smoke and mirrors of the gas rates. Vicki

-- Vicki McGaugh TX (vickilonesomedoe@hotmail.com), July 06, 2001.

I'm not possitive of the prices in the stores now because we by ours fresh from a neighboring farm for $1.40 a gallon. I believe it is around $2.30.

-- Terry - NW Ohio (aunt_tm@hotmail.com), July 06, 2001.

In S. Central MO prices range from 2.89 to 3.49 a gallon for whole (3.5%) milk. You can get 2% at Sam's Discount Clubs for $2.02.

I just paid 2.95 for a gallon of raw Jersey milk here from Young's Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs OH (5% butterfat and about 1/4th cream floating at the top of the carton). Not bad for BGH free milk, the last time I saw some of that in a store it was 2.99 for a HALF gallon of 2%, and it was pastuerized and homogenized to boot (which I count as a negative).

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 06, 2001.

We bought a gallon last night because the grandchildren were here for the week end-----I normally am still useing my y2k----powdered milk----but we paid $3.89 at the store for a gallon ---in the Flint Hills of Kansas.

-- Sonda in Ks. (sgbruce@birch.net), July 08, 2001.

Cindy, nobody I know who sells goats milk would dream of charging anywhere near $5 a gallon - ESPECIALLY not after they'd already taken the cream! I think you should seek another source for your goat's milk.

-- Sojourner (notime4@summer.spam), July 08, 2001.

southern california- 1 gal whole milk $3.05+ depending on brand. gas, regular 87 octane 1.81-2.15 depending on area. beef prices went up a whole lot in the last 2 months.
