Revival of the genealogy threads...

Not going to harp on about the loss of my Dad, other than to use it as an illustration of how important it is to talk to older members of the family if you decide to research your family tree. Don`t put it off, you just don`t know what`s round the next corner, and it is the easiest and most logical way to start building up a picture of the family.

It is a sad/happy coincidence that I chose Dad`s last year to be the one where I began my investigations. It brought us closer together, and I gained very important insights into our family which could so easily have been lost. I am so pleased that I managed to find the missing information on his Dad that had caused him such anxiety for near on sixty years.

OK.....enough of the heavy stuff! Because I seem to be the only one in the family with the time or inclination to gather the family archives, Mum gave me a wonderful present. It is a crocodile skin writing case which she gave Dad for his 21st birthday. It is stuffed full of old photos, and some wonderful bits and pieces correspondence, old bills etc. Dad was obviously a hoarder, and though the stuff he kept would be of no interest to most people, I am finding it fascinating.

For example, Dad kept the bill for having electricty put into their house in George Street. November 1956, fitted by F. W. Johnson & Sons of Hotspur Street Tynemouth, for the right royal sum of £32.4s.0d. Mum and Dad, as tenants had to pay for it.....then the landlord put up the rent because they had electricity!!!

The buildings insurance document for our first house makes interesting reading too. Annual Premium £2.17s.0d. on our £2,855 brand new house in Shafestbury Cres. in Whitley Bay - that was 1960. And the agreement for Dad`s first car, again in 1960, £290 for a Wolsley 1500, if my memory serves me right. Big year for Mum and Dad!

I also received throught the post recently, the Index to the 1851 Census of Northumberland covering the following areas: North Shields, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley, Monkseaton & Tynemouth Workhouse, Wallsend, Willington & Howdon. The information listed is: Surname, forenames, relationship to head of household, marital satus, age, occupation, birthplace, county of birth, folio number, enumerator`s district. I assume the last two are what you would need if you want to go and look at these records at Morpeth. I`ll be happy to look up any names that you feel might be relevant to your family in these areas, you never know, it might just be a piece of information that gets you started in your search!(:o)

I ordered these from the Northumberland and Durham family History Society - so if any of you would like to order copies of other areas, I can give you the address.(:o)

Some amazing stuff there. You should put them all into an album of some kind. Cultural and historical artefacts like those are hard to come by and will probably be even rarer as we go into the digital age. "Ah, here's a disk that my great great great grandad min left for us back in 2001. I see Newcastle weren't doing very well, even then..." ;-)

I'm very interested in all that - especially as my dad retires this year. I'm trying to get him to write down what he remembers of his family and his early years - a sort of memoirs - type thing. I'm also wondering about getting him to do a video or maybe 'interview' him. I recorded my Grandma onto tape in 1989 just months before she passed on. My dad still won't listen to it but i've got some classic stuff on there - singing loads of the songs she used to sing as a kid. telling us about her family and opinions on her own kids!

Months ago I posted a message on a Delap genealogy bulletin board asking for any Delaps from Newcastle to get in touch. I just received a reply so i'll be following that up as well. Can you email me the address please Galaxy? taaaaa..

Hi Min - would you think there would be any Delaps in the areas I mentioned? I`ll have a look anyway and you can see if any ring a bell.

website for the History Society I mentioned is:

http://www.geocities.com/ndfhs

Sorry I can`t do the html thing. You`ll find an order form for books etc., on there.

BTW what a lovely idea, recording your Gran! (:o)

Hello Galaxy and Min

It's a funny coincidence - I'm sitting here typing in my mother's childhood stories into the PC so that I can make a surprise birthday present 'This is your life' book for her 80th birthday in 2 weeks time. I started collecting her stories about 4 years ago and have quite a stock now.

We are going for 2 weeks at Easter to visit her for her birthday. I'll also go into the NDFHS in Bolbec Hall next door to the Lit & Phil down by the Central Station. I've been a regular visitor once or twice a year for the last few years. It's a great place with lots of friendly helpful and enthusiastic people and all the books and microfiches and now with more and more CD ROMs to search through much faster instead of poring over dusty records. You can join for 10 pounds a year subscription, which gives you 4 journals a year plus of course the use of the facilities.

If you've got anything particular that you would like me to search for, I could try to find it when I go in to Bolbec Hall. The NDFHS web site is http://www.geocities.com/Athens/6549/ and you can on-line order the census indexes etc from http://www.geocities.com/Athens/6549/Books.html

Other good places are the Tyne and Wear Archive Service in the ex- Coop building on Blandford Street (my family lived opposite there in the 1850/60's - I found out from the 51 & 61 Census in TWAS) and the Central Library Local Studies Department, and the Nothumberland Record Office in Morpeth.

Good luck with the searching.

Are you related to Rory, min? It can't be a very common name.

Thanks for the offer Barry. And again, what a lovely idea!(:o)

Min

Just for fun I did a quick search in the Mormons Genealogy site for you. It's not just for Mormons! For some reason, their religion means they have to locate as many as possible of their ancestors and get them baptised or whatever into the Church, even if they are dead. The net result is that they have the biggest and best records of genealogy in the world. Built up by mass photocopying/filming:transcribing of parish records, census records etc from allo over, and now lots is on the internet in their IGI International Genealogical Index.

To search you just go to http://www.familysearch.com/

Here's what I got (sorry it's not in any clever format - I don't know how to do it yet)

There seem to be a fair few Delaps in Cumberland and Durham.

I hope this helps to get you going.

You are a sad bunch of anoraks. Particularly you barry.

The first line of your Mormon search Delap - Tollemache, this only means I am probably related to min through marriage.

Mrs gus has a stepmother called Tollemache. They are the proud owners of huge, huge tracts of land. Including one Ham House on the banks of the Thames in Kingston / Richmond area of London.

Now if he comes over here I will feel obliged to put him up!

Min - my Mam used to know a lady in Whitley Bay called Jenny Delap - any relation?

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2001

So we've got long-lost relatives Mrs Gus and Min re-united! Any more for any more? You're right, Gus, it's a bit anoraky but you find some interesting (if you're an anorak) bits of history at the same time.

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2001

I really would like to become involved, however I do not have the time. You unearthing a link between min and I however may put me off for good!

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2001

Aaarggh. related to gus. never! I'll definitely be invoking the 'relative clause of accommodation' at some point then...! ;-))

Cheers for all this info - i'm overwhelmed, really. no, honestly!

I'm related to Rory, somewhere along the line but we're not sure where. Never known a Jenny Delap, i'm afraid...another relative somewhere along the way...

funnily enough it's an Irish surname by all accounts. Hence the link to Rory [playing for EIRE]. My Grandma was a 'Bruce', my great grandfather a 'Drummond' so if there's any of you out there...look out!

Unfortunately, as i'm without me computer for a few months i can't get all this info onto it - how long do these threads stay 'alive'...?
