One-wheeler

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I'm new to seeing Junkyard Wars (I don't watch much TV, it's too often insipid) but enjoy JW toooo much! I'm surprised that the suggested challenge list does not include Motorized One-Wheeler. You might assume that's nearly impossible to envision, but my brother and I have both seen pictures of a one wheeled motorcycle from the 50's or 60's. The wheel was about six feet in diameter and the frame, motor and seat were inside the wheel; the weight of the motor and rider keeping the interior level as the wheel spins outside. I wonder if some kind of gyroscopic device could be incorporated also? What do all you geniuses think? Thank you for a thoughtful, very worthwhile show!!!!! ...Steef

Believe it or not, this has been discussed more than once. Complete with links to sites with the original stories of these contraptions on two continents.

They even took it one step beyond this, and built a pair of "no wheelers" for one show. It was a very good race to the finish line.
