Let's All Form an APPLICANT PACT

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I suggest that any other applicants notify me of their email address, and we make a pact to notify each other when we Get the Good Word. I'd be happy to put the mailing list together, and serve as the informer. Simply let me know when you hear, and I'll email the news to everyone else.

The reason I suggest this is that I think we would be dissuaded from posting on here if we got the news. However, what is wrong with sharing the good news with your friends via email?

Just a thought. Email me if you want to "take the oath".

The email address IS a working one, although it may not appear to be.

Maybe it's all a trick, and RDF isn't filming JYW this season. Maybe they just wanted all of us to apply so that we would keep this bulletin board busy.

No!! You must let us lurkers know who gets chosen! Please! Only a threat like this could bring me out of lurk-mode.

Wow...Scott just made a Lurker flushing device out of scrap!

Impressive...

Just FYI, the "Scrapheap Challenge" (UK) contestants have already been chosen. One of the lucky ones put up a post on the Channel 4 site saying that his team had been chosen, but he was not allowed to divulge the name of his team. Incidently, he only signed the post with his first name, so their may be a rule against divulging too much of an identity as well. If RDF makes us Americans follow the same "top-secret" rules, nobody will be able to post anything-- especially since we are already so familiar with applicant names and team names.

Just thought ya'll should know.

We made a decision not to tell many folks of our application prior to the last series. We have also been close to the vest this time, this is as public as I get. If you were to check, none of the applicants for Survivor who went public prior to being selected got on the show.

I don't know if it will make any difference, but, I believe that there is such a thing as too much publicity.

Since your odds of being selected are about 1 in 125, I won't do anything that isn't necessary at this point, except comment here once in a while.

That is my view and I could be wrong!

Well, as I've said elsewhere in this discussion board, we're keeping a lid on press about our application here. That's tough to do since I share the hallway with the News Director of 4 of this area's top radio stations. Lyn works for the number 1 TV station in this market, and Frank works for both of us and another station.

We have told our family and co-workers and have their support and understanding and they are trying to help us cope with our affliction.

As for using this forum provided by the producer's of JYW. I have posted here because they gave us this place to congregate. I have met many great people that I hope to call a friend long after May 6th if I get on the show or not. Why would they hold our enthusiam for JYW aginast us? That would be counterproductive, and hurt the show in the long run.

As for posting an annoucement that you made "the short list" or the "Great 8" as it were, c'mon people. . .TLC will post it and so will RDF. I'm sure they understand that we will have to tell someone, and besides for a few sore losers, everyone else here will just be happy one (hopefully more) of us got to the "big dance". If Cathy (sorry, but she is the boss!) wants it Top Secret, then we will all abide by her wishes, but I would hope that she and the rest of her staff would understand that divulging this information won't hurt anyone.

I would hope that all the potientials posting here and the ones only brave enough to read our thoughts would understand that no matter who gets on, posting how well a team did, who made it to the finals, or who won the chamionship could wreck it for everyone. RDF is making this show for TLC so people will be astounded and amazed by what we all can do in 10 hours. Knowing the winner before it airs, is like someone telling you how a book ends, it ruins it! Keep in mind that we all want to get our 15 minutes, but giving out that information would drasticly cut down on the "drama" needed to make people watch.

If I have ruined my chances with our website, or sharing my thoughts with all of you than RDF has their priorities screwed up. It should be about being able to make it happen in the yard, not how much you goof off in your free time!

Once we had made the show, as it were, the smoking light was lit.

The hardest thing to do was keep quiet after we got back, although it wasn't too hard to figure out that we lost. We didn't go back, duh. All the newspaper and radio people in this area went along with us and our wishes to not let on prior to the show airing. Then when we gave them the green light they did a marvelous job, we couldn't have asked for more. If I could post pictures here I would show you all some of what was done, after we were selected.

I personally don't consider the web, web sites, or this board to be detrimental, what I mean by going public is newspaper, radio and TV.

It would be in very bad taste to post the outcome of any or all the episodes before airing.

I also like the Idea of E-mail notification of friends about the selection rather than posting.

Again this is my opinion, I could be wrong!

Excuse me Melanie but *SOME* UK contestants being chosen does not mean that *all* of them have been.... (i hope)

As for posting results, why doesnt everyone take the lead from all the other contestant web sites (like the NERDS for example) and refrain from *ever* explicitly posting who wins what.

What?? You ask. Well, some countries don't get to see the series for a couple of years and if the results are bandied around then it mucks it up for them. I think I found an RDF site with a completed result table as we were watching the series here and it did take away the excitement a bit.

Hmmm, you could always run it on a different page with "SPOILER WARNING!" labels showing.

Telling people about sucessful applications before hand? Well, I know for sure that such a thing for us would get the entire country watching if they knew a kiwi team was in. I'm sure it's the same for all your communities.

Tell or not to tell? It's all a storm in a tea cup. The good teams get in, the ummm not-so-lucky-but-still-very-enthusiastic teams don't. Having a web page won't change that. RDF have done this for several years and will let people know exactly what they expect re confidentiality.

All this is a bit like how single people always debate the issue of male or female leadership in marriage - but when you get married its just not an issue... yes dear ;) oppps, gotta go and wash the dishes...

Given that RDF has a link on the JYW page to the "list of teams that have admitted applying", they aren't that shy of us knowing at least that much. I would't be surprised that they will shut down successful applicants from going public. Anyone who wants to be on the show will definetly not breach disclosure and risk their chance once they get to the next round.

me->brain.un_lurk(JYW);

Survivor and Junkyard Wars are in very different market positions. In Survivor, they needed control of the public images of their contestants so that they could script the show to be the best soap opera possible, and make better ratings. My impressions is that RDF media cares more about their mission of education, which would benefit from all the publicity that it can get. Though they have a lot of great teams, there is no aura of mystery to be maintained; the suspense derives from the challenges and the designed used to overcome them. I can't see having a web site being a bad thing from their perspective. The only reason we don't have one is that we aren't sure if we should be engaging in self-promotion when we aren't even on the show. I mean, all the web sites are kinda derived from the NERDS site, but they EARNED the right be proud of their team. We are just a bunch of nerdy Alaskans who love machines. The only justification I could find for our putting up a web site (which will be finished now that I'm back from recruiting trips) is that I've had so much fun watching everyone else's videos. Wow, I just blathered a lot. (Next show: a reality-based horror show "When Lurkers ATTACK!")
