I wouldn't use any current production Canon flash on anything but a Canon camera. Other than the 480EG, none of them have any form of automation that will work with anything other than a Canon body. The 480EG might work in auto mode, but is a terribly expensive way to get a flash that would work on your Zenit.

If you need a flash that will work with your Canon and your Zenit, you'd be better off with a Metz or Sunpak that requires/uses dedicated modules for the Canon and has available a generic module for the Zenit.

For much less money you can get an auto flash like the Vivitar 283, Sunpak 383, Phillips 536, etc. that would be great for the Zenit and would also work on the Canon.
