free snow

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi. I have been reading on this forum for sometime. I am not very talky so I have never asked a question or made a comment before. BUT since I live in Maine and it appears that the snow is NEVER going to stop coming I thought I would ask if anyone would like some snow. I promise I will only send the white stuff, not the yellow, since we have 4 dogs and a cat. That means if I can get the snow off the front yard we will again have some where to shovel it to! In my back yard at the moment we have about 4 feet of snow. The paths to the greenhouse and garden shed provide lots of hide and seek opportunities for the dogs when I let them out in the morning. I still can't see either way on the road when I back out in the morning to go to work because the banks are too high. We gave up trying to keep the mail box uncovered. Can't see the newspaper box. Trying to get to the barn is like climbing Mt. Everest. (That's just to get over the bank and down the other side. We gave up shoveling that too.) My goats are tired of being locked up in the barn but since there is no sign of ground in front of the barn and they don't like walking on snow they have no choice. My ducks are suppose to arrive in the latter part of April. Question? Can ducks slide down snow banks instead of swimming> :-) I think this is cabin fever.

By the way, if anyone likes shoveling please let me know. I'll provide the shovel and breakfast!

Mary

Ok, ok, you were sent by the weather gnomes to punish me for griping about the cold and meager snow and rain. I'm sorry. Never again will I complain! I thought I was sick of winter, now I see what we have is NOTHING. Hope you get some warmth and sunshine soon! Everything here is shedding like mad, so spring has to be almost here...doesn't it??? Maybe you can make some little duck toboggans before they arrive :) Anyway, welcome to the forum, Mary! Jan

Hi Mary,,gosh!!,,Montana has it good when compared to Maine...our snow is pretty much gone in the Valleys,,,a lot on the mountains though. That snow usually stays until July.*** Sure hope your Spring arrives early for you..take care, safe journeys...

Oh, Mary, you have my sympathies. I spent the afternoon trying to dig an area out around my clothes line. It's getting warm enough to melt the snow and hang clothes, but there's so much snow to melt I can't make it to the clothes line! Last February I was hanging clothes, this year it looks like maybe June?? : ) for northern Ontario.

Hey Mary...I live in Maine also, but here the daffodils are up about 4" or so. Still have patchy snow here and there, but the birds are singing their mating songs and my goats are shedding like crazy and their pasture has almost no snow left in it. I live along the central coast. Be patient, spring is definitely here!!

We have ducks and they LOVE playing in the snow..AND getting snowballs thrown at them. :-)

Here in the deserts of the Southwest we have the problem of trying to shovel the excess sunshine.

Well I can offer some more free snow .Mary you are not alone we got hit with 2 feet about a week ago and showers yesterday and today .

If I could figure out a way I'd take some off your hands, we NEED moisture here in south, central Montana. I'm worried if we don't have a really wet spring we're in for lots of fires again. :o( My husband, son and Dad have given up hopes of getting to take the boat fishing this year. The reseviors are already low and irrigation hasn't even started yet. I'm predicting that we'll see all the camping/ hiking areas shut down again due to it being such a fire hazard. My husband has been praying for two ft all winter, the other day I asked if he was giving good enough directions. LOL!!! Sorry your sick of it, I'm sure I would be too.

Trade you your snow for my snakes. Black snakes and rattlers and copperheads and water moccasins just now waking up here in Alabama...what fun! We could use alot of melted snow to improve the water table..you guys up in Maine could use more snakes..keeps you on your toes while gardening! God bless.

-- Lesley (martchas@bellsouth.net), March 28, 2001.

Lesley, Keep your snakes I hate !! I'll yake our snow anytime over snakes!!! We do have a lot of snow here in maine though. I like the snow but am getting tired of the cold.

Well, while I know this doesn't even begin to compare with your situation, we had sleet here Monday in Northeast Texas, near the Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana borders. Winter likes us all a lot this year and doesn't want to go away.

Feel your pain. Feel sorry for Cara, here on the forum too... this is her FIRST year up there with her new farmhouse and all that WHITE STUFF! yikes ..... She had NO idea!!

Thanks for the responses. It's good to know there are still people out there :-) By the way I have lived in CA, GA, TN, VA, MI, NY, MN, so I have been through all kinds of winters and non-winters. I love the winter but I am more than ready for spring. My sister lives on the coast in Maine also and she is always amazed at the difference 2 hours inland makes. I bought tulips at the grocery store today. My bit of spring.

Well, Mary is right! No person with a modicum of sense would ever even consider moving to Maine! If you think it's bad this year, think back to "1800 and 'froze to death' ", which was the "other" name for 1816. That year we had killing frosts in June, July, and August. I think we may have that again this year, and I especially want to warn you fine folks in Massachusetts. In fact, I think this may become the norm, so if you want to dump your waterfront Maine property because you abhor ice-fishing in August, e-mail direct and I'll see what I can do to help you rid yourselves of that albatross. I am, indeed, a fine and compasionate fellow! For those of you who are inextricably invested in Maine as your primary domicile, I offer condolances and a ray of hope. I speak specifically to Mary and Marcia, but also any other Maineiacs. Cara and I are planning a "Countryside get-together" this summer. Not sure if we'll do it at her place (Bangor area, more or less) or ours (a bit west of Portland), but we're planning lobster, clams, corn, mussels, etc cooked the old-fashioned way in seaweed. Interested? Lesley, you are welcome, and you may bring your snakes, but it's up to you and Neil to cook them, as I have no experience in that venue! GL to all!

-- Brad (homefixer@SacoRiver.net), March 28, 2001.

Don't be such a pessimist, Brad. Would you rather still be living in southeastern N.E.? Not me!! We don't want to scare folks like Mary out of Maine...just some of the "summah people". The clambake thing sounds like a good idea. Did that alot on Cape Cod. A good old New England type countryside get together. Mary..have you lived in Maine your whole life? If so, then you know that spring is around the corner. Keep the Faith!!

-- Marcia (HrMr@webtv.net), March 28, 2001.

I don't want no snow and no snakes. They would both get in the way of me mowing the front yard this weekend. I am a sissy, I'm not tough enough to handle those winters! It was 57 yesterday and I actually did NOT have my longjohns on! I will take these HOT summers with no air conditioning any day over that snow! I sure hope you get a major meltage soon, Mary. And Lesley, get some pigs and turn them loose, they'll eat all them snakes!

-- Cindy in Ky (solidrockranch@hotmail.com), March 29, 2001.

Nope haven't live in Maine my whole life...yet. :-) Really, I'm a transplant. Been here since 1981. Yesterday was good for melting snow. My driveway is half uncovered, now it's mud. Yea for mud season! I went into the basement to get some canned goods and there was natural light down there!!! Through the front basement window there was a sliver of natural light!

I really do miss Maine..lived in Farmington and Portland...1970 found myself in the middle of a HUGE blizzard on Christmas Eve when only snow flurries were forecast..Took us ten hours to get from Farmington to Portland..the folks along the highway were all lined up in their finest winter gear with their snowmobiles handing out food and hot chocolate..great neighbors!!!! In my younger days, we used to amuse ourselves doing "wheelies' with the VW in the college parking lot after a good storm. One thing I do not miss is making room in my purse for the can of de-icer for my car door locks. One of my favorite "snow' stories: the hospital at that time in Farmington had 50 beds...one of the LPNs was married to the undertaker..some poor girl came in in the middle of the snowstorm and delivered a still born infant. Rather than have the LPN call her husband to come and get the body of the infant, we all decided that she would just take it home with her. we wrapped up the body in a blanket and off she drove at the end of her shift. well, she slid off the road, hit a tree and was knocked out..along came a state trooper. He looked in the back seat and saw the "baby" in the blanket and immediately rushed it back to us....the nurse was just fine, but had a tough time explaining things when she woke up. Ah, Maine hospital-in-the-woods memories....God bless.

Lesley, That sounds like the first chapter to a good Stephen King novel!!!!
