How to make a maple syrup(sap) skimmer?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are in the process of boiling down our sap. I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how we could make a "skimmer" to skim off the foam on top of the sap while it is cooking. Or, what other 'tool' could we use as a substitute? I just love this forum, we have had many ?'s answered by fellow homesteaders. Thanks a million! Laura

Laura, they sell a commercial defoamer that you can use which will actually dissolve the foam. However, many of the backyard sugar makers use butter. Just add a small amount (1/4 tsp.) where it's foaming and that should take care of the problem. You'll want to get rid of the foam as it will definitely decrease your temperature and take much longer to draw off syrup.

We're up to our elbows in syrup as well - - don't you just love this time of year.

We use an old coffee strainer. Works real well.

I use a slotted spoon. Cheap and works great.

Years ago Dad took a lid from a large tin can poked a nail point through the tin in a pattern covering the lid with pinpricks. He then nailed it to a stick for a handle . It is rusty but still hangs in the shanty. Jack
