Strikes Cause Air Traffic Chaos In Italy Mar 20, 2001

Strikes by air traffic controllers and flight attendants forced the cancellation of some 300 flights at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport today.

Many airlines announced the cancellations ahead of the walkout to avoid having passengers show up at the airport and face long waits.

Scores of flights were also affected at Milan's Malpensa and Linate airports.

Departure and arrival halls for national flights were almost empty, news reports said.

Hundreds of passengers waiting to board international flights were left stranded.

The workers are striking over contract disputes.
