AVI to MPEG CDROM .. then MPEG CDROM to VCD with NERO

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi

This may have been discussed before but here I go & let me know where I’m going wrong!

I want to produce some MPEGs of music videos from RAW AVIs (each should run about 5min or less) recorded by VHS and directly live TV with Vdub, i.e. MPEG CD-ROM style rather than VCD. I’m in the UK so the output MPEG should be PAL format friendly. I want the output to look as good/close as the VHS/AVI (or even VCD) quality but I’m NOT expecting DVD quality … but it would be cool though!

I’ll use Virtualdub to capture AVI with these settings: - Audio PCM 44.1khz Stereo - Internal video compression Picvideo MJEG codec (Full Quality) - 384x284 dimension (rather than the usual PAL 352x288) - RGB24

If the above is OK, what other ADVANCE stuff do I need to adjust in Vdub under the VIDEO & CAPTURE menu before capturing? Anything to reduce OR eliminate frame dropping!

Then I intend to compress it to MPEG with any of the following (all are freeware): - AVI2MPEG - BBMPEG AVI2MPEG2 - TMPG (MPEG2 option is only 30 day trial) - AVI2VCD

1. AVI2MPEG Encoder If I choose AVI2MPEG, what should be the settings under: - Video Stream - Audio Stream - System Stream - More Details

If I want to make a VCD later, will this MPEG be OK with NERO for burning since I left the dimension at 384x284 before encoding though PAL should really be 352x288.

2. BBMPEG AVI2MPEG2 Encoder If I choose BBMPEG AVI2MPEG2 what should be the settings under: - Frame operations - Crop Frames - Convert output to resolution by - Output MPEG Resolution - Should I tick Edit Filter box?

When I click Start and then Settings, what changes do I need to make before encoding?

If I want to make a VCD later, will this MPEG be OK with NERO for burning since I left the dimension at 384x284 before encoding though PAL should really be 352x288.

Also, is it worth it to encode to MPEG2 instead of MPEG1 for better picture quality?

3. TMPG Encoder If I choose TMPEG, what should be under these settings: - Video - Advanced - GOP Structure - Quantize Matrix - Audio - System

If I want to make a VCD later with this MPEG, will this MPEG be OK with NERO for burning if I increase the dimension before encoding (e.g. 768x568) before encoding though PAL should really be 352x288.

Also, is it worth to encode to MPEG2 instead of MPEG1 for better picture quality? I know MPEG2 option here is only for 30 trial.

Please send your tips/advice to here or my e-mail below.

THANKS!
