split developement

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

hi there I just wanted to know if there is some kinda split developement is possible with the same developer for example D76 but with different concentrations. like for instance, first with concentrated developer and then diluted 1:1 or whatever,

Does this make any sence? and if at all it does, What would be it's effect? please forgive for such a stupid question. middle

Mid: Quite a few years ago there was a series of articles in Darkroom Techniques (called Photo Techniques today) magazine that discussed doing just that. However, the two developers were totally different formulas, not just different dilutions of the same formula. One was an extremely low contrast developer that developed only the shadow areas. The other was a higher contrast developer that developed the highlights. Also involved in the process was fully exposing the negs, then fully developing the negs, followed by a bleach step before developing in the two different developers. I don't recall exactly when these articles were published. Maybe you could contact them on their website.

All you'd accomplish would be obtaining a CI somewhere between what you'd get by using either of the concentrations for the same time.

Years ago I bought a book called, "Developing", by C.J. Jacobson and in it is an article about "two bath developement". It gives a formula for both developers and tells how to use them. If you can find a copy of this book--------you're in shape. If not: let me know how old you are and I may sell it to you. The age means only that I prefer to sell this to a younger photographer. Doesn't mean that you cannot have it. Only a preference. I am 64 3/4.
