Maximizing airflow in the worm bins [Vermiculture (Worms)]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

To maximize the airflow in my bins I have added lengths of 3 inch diameter pvc pipe covered with 1/64 holes around the entire length and circumference of the pipe. These I cut to length to fit snugly inside my bins, wedged against the air grilles I already have drilled in the sides at the bottom edge. This way Instead of bedding pressing up against the air grilles, I have 3 "sprinkler style" air tunnels underneath the bedding allowing flow through air circulation to help keep the bedding moisture consistant. This is similar to the aeration configurations in some store bought bins and can be added to a salvaged bin for just pennies and a couple hours of time.

Cool idea!!! I just turn mine as if it were compost. The little buggers don't seem to mind - even when they get sunlight for a little while. Just figured it was good exercise for em.....

I still turn mine also, but since adding the vent piping, the temp probe monitor indicates a constant core temp of 72 to 73 deg f. and the wormies seem much more content and active and no anarobic oders.
