Agence France-Presse

ROME (March 12, 2001 11:38 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - A bomb scare forced the evacuation of the Milan stock exchange Monday, a spokesman said.

Staff at Borsa Italiana, the private company that operates the exchange, were evacuated to Piazza degli Affarri in front of the building, the exchange's spokesman said.

Italy's paramilitary police entered the exchange to search for any explosives, said the spokesman, who gave no further details about the nature of the threat.

The computerized stock trading system continued to operate as usual, the spokesman said.
